Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread

Though if you really do want to get rid of the thread, Tuyono, it helps that you're the only commenter in it. You should be able to delete the posts in reverse order.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Is [l̥ː] or [ʎ̥] the more natural outcome of jarxvalma's [m̥>l̥] assimilation when it should be analogous to the [s>z] assimilation in Szor [zːœ̠r]? I don't understand the question. Are jarxvalma and Szor languages? If so, I don't immediately see how sound changes in separate languages involving ve...

Thanks. What about θ > ts ?
I got around to checking out the Index Diachronica, and it looks like θ > ʃ has happened a handful of times. Likewise with θ > ts.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

You implied that you've made a decision, but I'll just throw in my two cents. My own question: I am planning on using -th /θ/ as the nominative plural suffix for Denkurian. However, this would occasionally lead to the sequence that I would rather avoid of /θ/V/θ/, where V is any vowel or diphthong. ...

Re: Ởnh·Vú- Chamic Language

Just realized something amazing that has led the perfect phono-semantic matching. Ởnh·Vú has the word 陪 (bõy), a French borrowing meaning servant, and the word 㺏 (cão), which is the native word for buffalo. Because of this I think it's obvious that the Ởnh·Vú word for cowboy has to be 㺏陪 (cão·bõy) ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Why is it that in French, most adjectives follow nouns, but (what I would describe as) 'generic' adjectives preceed the nouns they describe? Cross-linguistically, it's not uncommon to treat a certain subset of adjectives differently. In languages with closed adjective classes, these meanings may be...

Re: Words to mean Friend

It seems to be that the French ‘ami’ has something to do with love Yes, most Romance languages have a descendant of Latin amicus , which derives from amo , "to love". Salmoneus' mention of drinking buddies reminds me of companion , "one with whom one shares bread". Words for siblings or other famil...

There are also title formulas based on clauses. Chapter titles in older books occasionally take the form: "In which [such-and-such happens]"

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Essentially, adjective declensions now have the same height-based characteristic vowels as the verb conjugations (/i/ for first declension/conjugation, /ɑ/ for second declension/conjugation (roua (noun)/rouayak (derivative adjective)), and /ø̞/ for third declension/conjugation). How odd is this arr...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Can a language with primary and secondary aspects have a null secondary aspect marker? I see no reason why not. Null markers are possible for any grammatical category. Whereas Ddoean's adjectives used to be formed with suffixes similar to <-xi>, they're now formed with suffixes based on the formati...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

You say you've 'realised' that you can't make an applicative into a causative. But that's not what I said. I pointed out that applicatives often ARE used as causatives, and showed you how: I-nom him-ACC ate-APP = I ate because of him (i.e. he made me eat). I thought in a causative the cause has to ...

Re: (EE) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Well, Mothfolk in question apparently have no problem "... wear(ing) silk from other races than their own. they find it rude to wear your slik." Then you see my point. Either wearing the silk of your dead speciesmates only rises to the level of “rude” for the moths (possible, just probably an impor...
