Re: Lesson/Guide Requests

I know this one might be a bit weird, but how about a Polynesian language like Rapa Nui or Hawaiian? The Rapa Nui are my favourite ancient culture, and I've been trying to learn their language from Internet-based resources with little luck. I would definitely follow along any Malayo-Polynesian lang...

Re: PSA: aeiouǝ Inventories Exist in Natlangs!

Tocharian B and apparently A both have /aeiouǝ/. While they do both have phonetic [ɨ], in the case of Tocharian B it is simply an allophone of unstressed /ǝ/, whereas in Tocharian A, Proto-Toch. /ɨ/ is elided in open syllables and inserted into consonant clusters, and supposedly exists solely as a t...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Ok, sorry. Yeah, natlangs have all sorts of odd asymmetries in vowel systems like that, so it's probably normal enough. It's not even particularly asymmetric. Natlangs can get a lot weirder than that; Dorig, for example has /i ɪ ɛ a ɔ ʊ u aː/ with a single long vowel. Your intuition for what's plau...

Why do you say this? It may not be super common but I hardly feel it's bizarre or unstable.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Would it be more likely that long vowels are slightly fronted compared to short vowels (or short vowels are slightly backed compared to long vowels), or vice versa? Specifically I'm playing with /a ā/ (well, a centralized /a/), but I assume it'd be the same for anything. I think it's slightly more ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

"It's always been like that" can only go so far back in time. To suggest that it's been irregular the entire time is unlikely to hold water if we go back in time 1700 years or even 4000. I guess your explanation will do for that. The explanation doesn't need to go back to Proto-World; irregularitie...

Re: The Majestic 4th Conversation Thread

Reminds me of Iqaluit, where you can send a letter to "the 8-storey highrise, Iqaluit" and it will get there without trouble, because they don't (or didn't?) have a viable address system there. If you can be that vague and have it delivered without trouble, then I'd say it's a very viable system [:P]

I only got through the section on nouns so far, but I definitely like what I see! The possessive prefixes coming after the plural reduplication is especially cool. And this is fantastic:

Re: CBB Conlang Relay VII

I have received the torch. However this week happens to be very busy for me, and I won't be able to start until Friday at the earliest, meaning I won't be able to pass it on until at least Saturday (bearing in mind I'm a day ahead of some of you). If people are unhappy with another hold up then I'll...
