Re: What are you listening to/watching?
Interestingly, I'm playing a videogame (Cyberpunk 2077) that does that--several characters will speak in various languages to the player character (Japanese most prominently, but also a little Haitian Creole and I believe at least one character spoke Korean... there's also ambient Russian, Spanish, ...

Re: The Sixth Conversation Thread
@Sal - here's the thing, though. I'm not telling people it takes forever to get some writing down either, so they might as well give up. On the contrary, with the figures I gave, I wrote 2000 words in an hour and a half and hit the daily target for NaNoWriMo (1667 words) in, obviously, less time. I'...

Re: The Sixth Conversation Thread
Time isn't as much of an issue with writing as people think. If you type at the average of 40wpm - and if you're writing novels and conversing on forums, you're probably someone who types much, much faster than that societal average (60wpm doesn't seem unreasonable or uncommon for fluent young comp...

Re: If you were to write one novel...
An interesting idea! I quite like the idea of generations of caretakers on a colony ship; by the end they would have quite a different perspective and norms than the passengers, which could lead to some very interesting stuff. Two questions come to mind for me (if you don't mind; I'm intrigued by th...

Re: If you were to write one novel...
I've written a fair bit, actually! The dalar world (where my languages Tirina and Azen are spoken) is urban fantasy; the dalar live alongside modern humans (albeit with most humans being largely unaware of their presence--it's not a total masquerade, but your average human would likely dismiss stori...

Re: Weird Dream Thread
I had a dream last night about the next US presidential election, in which I had a heated discussion with a coworker over the merits of Kamala Harris--I supported her strongly, he did not. This was unexpected because I have no particular feelings about Kamala Harris, know very little about her posi...

Re: CBB Conlang Relay XII - IT BEGINS (signups remain open)
All right folks, I'm sorry but I think I'm going to have to drop out. Stuff just keeps coming up and I keep pushing back finishing the translation, so I think it's time to just pass it to the next person!
I can forward along the details to Parlox, or Jackk/Iyionaku can do it?

Oof, I'm also going to need an extension. Just haven't had the focus time to buckle down and get it done.

Re: CBB Conlang Relay XII - SIGNUPS OPEN - STARTING Saturday 11th July
re: relay grammars: I think it's also okay to underspecify things where you're confident context will be sufficient for the recipient. They're "just" translating, so they don't necessarily need to know all the underlying rules. I definitely cut things down to the bare minimum and gloss ove...

Re: CBB Conlang Relay XII - SIGNUPS OPEN
I'm in. I'll probably use Tirina. (every relay I'm like, I'll use Azen this time, no really! and then I never get around to it, so let's just admit it'll be Tirina up front)

Agreed. There's no reason a physically similar vocal tract would imply a species thinks similarly to humans.

It's the only term I'm familiar with in Michigan, USA, but I can't speak for other regions. Thesaurus.com suggests "belly buster", "belly flopper", "belly whop", and "belly whopper", but I've never heard any of these and am having a hard time finding any actua...

Re: (EE) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
You say that like it's meant to come as a surprise to me. No, of course I have no knowledge of metal and it's subgenres - nobody's ever given me a reason to look into the topic. I'm not sure it's something one can really get into as an adult, anyway, lacking any of the cultural connotations and sym...

Re: (EE) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I mean, sure, the traditional type of heavy metal has lost most of its popularity, but it has given birth to so many subgenres and more subgenres keep being born from those subgenres. They may be "less metal" than traditional heavy metal by one definition[...] Personally I think they're a...
