Help with Chinese/Japanese character? Please translate
So I found this hat way in the back of my closet, and it's very obviously Michigan Football (American) themed, because my father was a fan, but I have no idea what it says. It looks very similar to the character for cat, but I'm pretty sure that it isn't the character for csssssssat, so I have no id...

Ideas for new conlangs
So I've been interested in languages for like the past 3-4 years, and considering that that's almost a 4th of my current life, I can pretty definitively say that I'd enjoy making a language. However, I'd prefer if said language had a real purpose to it, something that gave it some real worth in my e...

Re: I need more phonemes!!! Help!
Well, as far as phoneme inventories go, yours is far from the smallest. (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotokas_language or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaiian_phonology). So I wouldn't say you don't have enough sounds! But if you want more phonemes, perhaps add another kind of contrast? Aspi...

Re: Spanish Por Para issue. Help!
*Sigh* So basically It's just not possible? fair enough... it makes sense in its own way, its a natural language after all... *Sigh* But thank you for the information about how case is syntactic and how case isn't what I think it is, because now I have an actual reason to agree with you. I have no f...

Spanish Por Para issue. Help!
So I've been into language nerds for like the past year and a half and that's given me enough time to understand a lot more about linguistics than most people. I'm not saying that I'm particularly good at it, but its still not common that people understand linguistics because they think its good, us...

Re: New Conlang: Junaks (Please Review)
Are aspects also expressed by auxiliaries? What is the semantics of the aspects with stative verbs like 'be sick' or active verbs like 'bake'? I mean if any of the auxiliaries that you saw can be considered an aspect, then yes. And thank you for bringing up the idea of stative and active verbs, 'ca...

New Conlang: Junaks (Please Review)
So I've been working on a language that I call Junaks, and I just want feedback on it. It's not done, but I'm far enough in that if I want to change anything that I've already done I should. The goal of this language is to: -be a personal language that's used by my friends and me -be logical when it...

Re: Aspects and stuff. Help
You know, after thinking about it, I think its actually a better Idea just to not have any tense at all. Perfect and perfect-progressive are kinda intertwined with tense anyways, so if I get rid of tense and only have aspects as well as adpositional phrases that state when an action took place, it w...

Re: Aspects and stuff. Help
Thank you for both of your answers. My first question has been answered, and for my second question, I think I'll just call it perfect-progressive and call it a day. The perfect aspect in my opinion is a little bit uneccesary if you have a language with a past tense. But for languages like Mandarin ...

Aspects and stuff. Help
So I'm making a language, duh (most of us are) and I'm want to use some aspects, three to be exact: first one is momentane- action done one time. Ex:Jump Second one is progressive- action that is being done. Ex:Running (not jumping, explained in next aspect) third one (the subject of half this topic...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
So, There's something I might wanna add into my language but once again I'm going to ask the more educated crowd about it before I go and screw it up: Its easier to give you an English example, so here, "He punched him" so my question is this. have there been languages that mark the two pr...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
So there's something that I want to add into my language and know that I will add into my language, but before doing so I want to understand and classify it so that I use it properly. I think that it's a noun case, but I'm not very sure. Its very common in Japanese when quoting somebody else during...

I would say that it's fine, but I'm no veteran so wait for more opinions or look into other natural languages to see how common or uncommon it is.holbuzvala wrote:Would it be weird/super unnatural to have only voiced fricatives in a phonetic inventory (alongside voiced/unvoiced pairs for the stops)?

Question: I looked up the definition of copula... Wouldn't the only copula be the verb 'to be' or are there others?

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Is there a point in having a pronouns for "it" in my language if I have a demonstrative pronoun that means "the thing"? like, I don't need it right?
