Magræg, a pseudo-Celtlang
Hi all. I've been working on a new language for a while, called Magræg /ma.ɡreː/. This is really an effort for me to get back into conlanging after my last project got way, way too complicated for me to sufficiently manage. My goal is to create a language heavily-inspired by Brythonic Celtic languag...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I have a category of nouns in one of my languages which is ... kinda animacy? It's for broad descriptors of animals (like "man, horse, dog, boy", etc.), but does not include sessile animals, plants, supernatural beings and deities, or automata, or more specific or technical (from an animal...

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
I'm trying something out. I'm restarting an old personal language, renamed to Nottwy, from scratch, and starting with a better phonology. /m, n, ŋ/ /p, b, t, d, k, g/ /ɸ, β. θ, ð, s, z, ʃ, ʒ, x, ɣ, ħ/ /t̪θ, d̪ð, t͡ʃ, d͡ʒ/ /l/ /ɹ, j, w, ɥ/ /i, ɯ, u/ /ɪ/ /e, ɤ, o/ /ə/ /ɛ, ʌ, ɔ/ /a, ɑ, ɒ/ I'm not crazy...

Re: Amanghu (天語), or Chinese Altaic
How did the initial mutations develop? I was inspired by consonant mutations in Irish, and I originally planned to make it much more complex, but that didn't gel too well with my goals. I was thinking they'd have formed from abbreviations of 旦 and 弗, where the nasal at the end of /ɥón/ would "...

Re: Amanghu (天語), or Chinese Altaic
Interesting, and I especially like the idea that there would be widespread folk etymologies. Will you use complicated and/or rare hanzi at all? Not saying you should/shouldn't or that it'd be better or worse either way, just asking. I already have a few hanzi which appear to be archaic or no longer...

Re: Amanghu (天語), or Chinese Altaic
So I've been very busy retroactively evolving Amanghu. I actually never spent a serious amount of time figuring out how Amanghu would have developed from Proto-Sinitic and Old Amanghu, so I found about 100 Proto-Sino-Tibetan roots and went to town on them. I worked out a pre-Chinese root for each on...

Re: Amanghu (天語), or Chinese Altaic
If you want to have words of (more or less) definitely Turkic origin, you can be fairly safe with Proto-Turkic. Regardless of whether or not you believe Altaic is a thing, there's this Proto-Altaic dictionary that's a good resource. If you want to have Persian loanwords but they'd be chronologicall...

Re: Amanghu (天語), or Chinese Altaic
Oh, my problems started right at the beginning: all my attempts at "Sino-Altaic" conlangs were way too Turkic as soon as I began working on them. [:P] Basically, one of them was just "take Kazakh and replace random words with Mandarin ones, then apply random sound changes like making...

Re: Amanghu (天語), or Chinese Altaic
Really interesting! There's always something about both Chinese- and Altaic-influenced conlangs that's nice, so the two influences together is awesome (and something I've also tried to do myself, but always end up failing for various reasons), especially with the alternative Cyrillic orthography gi...

Re: Amanghu (天語), or Chinese Altaic
Firstly, I do really like the look of this, I think Sinitic as a family doesn't get enough love, and I would really like to see both a description of your parent language and the changes which came down into the modern language. However I do have a couple of questions. Firstly why do you refer to i...

Amanghu (天語), or Chinese Altaic
Hi all, I've been working on a new Chinese-inspired conlang, just for fun. I found that agglutinative languages just weren't for me, so I've gone hard in the opposite direction. I haven't got that far so far, but I'm really hoping to get some feedback. I've pretty much just figured out some verb stu...

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
Looks good to me! I can definitely see the Mandarin influence, but if you hadn't explicitly said that was a source of inspiration for you, I don't know if I would have picked up on it. I personally don't feel like you have too many velar consonants. You have even more coronals. If you want to reali...

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
I've been playing around with a phonology for a new analytic language. And I've stolen a lot of the inventory from Mandarin. It's got a little ... velar? I'm also having some big trouble figuring out how to implement tones, because I can't actually consistently enunciate contour tones. /m, n, ŋ/ /p,...

Re: When beginning to make a conlang, where do you start?
I'm far from an expert as I've only started three conlangs (and gave up on one), but the process I take is as follows: 1) Figure out what you want to achieve with your language and set out a design philosophy. 2) Draw up a rough phonology and phonotactics. 3) Work on orthography. Don't get too inves...
