How would one form roots?
I've been considering a language inspired by Turkish and other Oghuz languages, yet I'm unsure of how to properly form roots off of which to base some of the words I have in mind. Does it come down to concocting something that sounds nice, and going from there, or is there/can there be more rhyme or...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
This is probably hopelessly belated, but even so...I want to try to help... It sounds like you kinda have a relatively free hand with your take on Danian...you could have it look like a creole of Celtic & Germanic (Germanic syntax and Celtic lexicon? equal amounts of Celtic and Germanic all sti...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
This question ties into the languages of Tolkien—specifically that of Danian, or the language of the Green-elves of Ossiriand and the Greenwood in an earlier version of his legendarium. It's my desire to expand it a bit while endeavoring to maintain its Anglo-Saxon inspiration. Part of the trouble w...

Re: Celto-Nordic Conlang
Interesting. Good to know. Though, what makes it strange, exactly?criminalmammal wrote: ↑14 Jan 2023 05:59 There's Ultimate Ridley's Nióruais (Conworkshop, Reddit) as a pretty solidly good, if strange, example.

Celto-Nordic Conlang
I wasn't sure whether to make an entirely new topic for this question or to post in the Quick Questions thread. Nonetheless, I did wonder whether someone here has attempted to make a language based on a hypothetical scenario where the Celtic languages found their way to Scandinavia in a sort of reve...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
So I had a run through Wiktionary's list of Proto-Indo-European roots, and of the 650 it has, I found two that end in *d (in the standard reconstruction) that have derived forms with an *m -initial suffix that then make their way down to Proto-Germanic: PIE *h₁wed- (dowry) > *h₁wed-mō > PG *wetmô (...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I've mentioned this topic once before, but for those who don't know I've been endeavoring to create a language for the Windan tribe of Avari from Tolkien's legendarium. My progress has been slow but not entirely wasted. Yet I've reached a snag in that I'm not sure how to resolve a specific consonant...

Re: Avarin Language Development
As would I. I'm not sure which of the known tribes would fit the bill, but I've seen attempts to create a distinctly "northern" Avarin dialect. Not one that would be Baltic in nature, but still different from what we're familiar with.

Re: Avarin Language Development
Anyway, I know I didn't really answer your question, but maybe I'd say that you did, in a round-about way. If nothing else, you've given me inspiration off of which to base the language itself. C: the kw- has weakened to hw-, as in Germanic, and then in turn to w-, as in (most) modern English. This...

Avarin Language Development
This is my first time endeavoring to develop a constructed language, and I was wonder what, if anything, I might be able to do to aid the process. As I'm looking specifically to develop a language for Windan tribe of Avari elves. My main problem is I'm not sure what language, if any, Tolkien might h...
