Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

I was up in the Yorkshire Dales earlier today visiting a place called Druid's Temple... still no snow. Well, a little bit of snow or thick frost, honestly not sure which, but not proper snow [:P]

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I don’t think many academic authors actually make much from books at all? Or at least certainly not enough for it to be a main source of income (apart from the small number which also fall into semi-popular stuff) It’s mostly only other university libraries which buy a copy and maybe the odd specia...

Re: How would you romanize Kazakh?

I came up with this back in 2013 over on the ZBB (although with a couple of changes): /p b t d (tɕ) k g q ɢ/ < p b t d (ć) k g q y > /f v s~θ z~ð ʃ ʒ (ɕ x) h/ < f v s z š ž (ś x) h > /m n ŋ/ < m n ŋ > /r l j w/ < r l j w > -RTR: /æ ɘ ʉ i̯ɘ y̯ʉ/ < ä i ü e ö > +RTR: /ɑ ə ʊ u̯ʊ/ < a ı u o > bʊrəŋɢə y̯ʉ...

but considering the fact that misspellings and lack of font support for easily typable letters like İ, ı, Öö and Üü have literally gotten people killed Yikes, what? [:S] I think Vlürch was referring to this unfortunate incident (and apparently it's not the only time incomplete support of < ı > has ...

Re: The Mystery of the Desert

I know that qwed117 has more to show because he used to share parts of this project on IRC and what's posted here is far from the full picture. Whether he feels the full picture is presentable, though, is for him to answer. So you actually told me qwed had some ideas about the TL on the IRC that he...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge

The extension has been extended; I'm almost done with sound changes for all ten languages, after that I plan to run around 30 proto-words thrhough sound changes, although I'm not sure if I'll actually do that much. I'm doing mainly binary branching with a few areal features. Maybe expect it by the ...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

Britain's snowy weather has been weird af and totally not like how it is normally, such that Cambridge (in the south) got a foot of snow yesterday morning while I (who is currently back home in the north) didn't see any of that until last night. We've got none at all so far where I live in North Yo...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Took me long enough to remember this one, but the Icelandic word for "farmer", bóndi , comes from the present participle of Old Norse búa , "to reside". I don't know, though, whether the change came about because it was modifying a noun, e.g. maðr , that was later dropped, or if it underwent some so...

Redoing Proto-Lorgyak's phonology because I utterly hated the last one. The basic principles are the same, but I think this one feels better. Still resulting in the Lorgyak languages, spoken in the light blue region in 1AD: http://i.imgur.com/mLphxBB.png Consonants /tʰ kʰ qχ/ /p t k q qʷ ʔ/ /ɓ ɗ g/ ...

I'm going to redo the Proto-Lorgyak phonology. The one I had before just didn't sit well with me.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I’m not gonna fret over this unduly, but at the mo I’ve got /jy ɥi/ → wi ju in Núta diachronics. This seems somewhat counterintuitive at first glance, so I’m wondering what I could use as a justification. How about a triphthongisation stage where sth like this happened: jy → ɥuɪ̯ → ʊ̯i → wi ɥi → ɥi...

Re: Calendars (for Earth and for conworlds)

The calendar of Mto, on the other hand, is a thing I have given some consideration to, especially given that every four years they have a deficient year (where they have one fewer day) rather than a leap year. It's complicated because being a two-moon planet also affects how people would tell time ...

Re: Calendars (for Earth and for conworlds)

The idea of a 6-day week is a bad idea, because it is basically accidental religious discrimination, against my religion specifically. I am an Orthodox Jew. We do not work on Saturdays. Even if you change to a six-day week, Sabbath for us will shift into the work week. " Six days may you work and p...

Re: Calendars (for Earth and for conworlds)

Shift New Year back to its proper location (25 March), thus correcting the Quidquidtember Anomaly. I was planning on just leaving New Year as January 1st. It still leaves September, October, November and December as etymological oddities, but with New Year falling the day after the winter solstice ...

Calendars (for Earth and for conworlds)

So, every so often I get to thinking about calendars, either for the Earth or for Yantas, and I was wondering how everybody else divides the year on their conworld(s) or would divide the year up on Earth given the chance to implement a new calendar. For me, I'd apply the following calendar on Earth:...

I have the idea of creating a writing system that originated from writing on whale or sea bones, but I do not know how the medium would affect the shape of the letters, if at all, nor do I know what implement would be involved. The closest I can come to answering this is with the Chinese Oracle Bon...

Yeah, my first thought was "Oh, God, I hope we don't have to pay for this wedding too..." I simply have no interest in either of them beyond that. We probably will in some way, although Prince Harry has apparently said that the Royal Family will pay for the wedding. At the very least, the worldwide...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Trying to work backwards and create a sketch of Proto-Qutrussan but a few sounds are tripping me up. How might I derive /dz/ from the following proto phonology: pʰ tʰ kʰ p’ t’ k’ ʔ p t k f s s’ ʃ ħ ʕ m n ŋ r l w j a i u ɛ e ɔ o (+ length except /ɛ ɔ/) Bearing in mind that /s'/ > /ts/ and /ts/ occur...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

Puts me in mind of the time I watched a Trevor Noah stand up show with my girlfriend. (Bit preachy at times, but funny guy.) He was doing a bit where he claimed he likes to play 'Spot the Black Person' in really white countries, like Scotland, in this instance. Trevor: "There's one! No, statue... T...
