Re: What did you accomplish today?

Figured out how Minten will handle subordinate clauses (yay conditional mood!), as well as diminutives and the usage of adjectives as states of being (e.g., he sick = he is sick). (yay essive!) Now, of course, I might have to rewrite all of my translations, seeing as they use the old system of verb-...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

While working on my conlang Minten, I recently hit a bit of a stumbling block... I don't know what to work on next! I've covered a lot of parts of speech, relative clauses, verbal moods, comparatives, etc. I know I need to work on a couple things like adpositions and vocabulary in general, but what ...

Is it naturalistic/plausible for a language to have no present tense, only a past and future?

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Thanks for the responses. It is interesting, I think sometimes that whatever syllables in a word carry the most semantic meaning would be most likely to be stressed... does this make sense? In any case, Minten has much more suffixing than prefixing. It is also very ablaut-ing, and many changes in ro...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I need to figure out how I'm going to handle stress in Minten... up to this point I have been considering first-syllable stress, but recently I considered final-syllable... is it possible to have no stress? How might this affect the morphology? Is there any relationship between morphology (e.g. whet...

Re: What did you accomplish today?

Figured out how I want to form the perfective in a way I finally like... Basically, add ç-e/u-(h)- to the desired verb... e.g. saru -> çusaru , serü -> çeserü . The fun part is in vowel-initial verbs, because the h gets deleted but changes the vowel: ehe -> ē /e:/ (yes that is a colon) ehi -> ei ehö...

Re: What did you accomplish today?

I made some noun declensions for my first introflecting conlang (as predicted), Minten. Creating roots is actually a lot easier than I thought it would be, the trouble is making the derivations so all of the words don't rhyme. The language uses 1, 2, 3, and 4-consonant roots, which I guess is not re...

Re: what languages influence your conlangs?

Adranik's phonology is rather Hungarian with a dash of Hebrew, and I suppose the grammar has its inspiration in Hungarian. There are some Japanese things, but not too many, mostly because I have difficulty understanding Japanese grammar. But for the most part, the language does its own thing when it...

Re: What did you accomplish today?

Yes, it is not "weird" in the sense of irregular. I just find the abundance of <n>s to be rather excessive. I may end up changing the rules a bit, because as you can see, the consonants get a little bit crowded. And you are correct, some of the rules are reduplication rules that cause diff...

Re: What did you accomplish today?

That sounds right. But most Latin names seem to be pretty noun-y in the first place... e.g. Caesar being the noun for "emperor" too. I suppose it would make sense if the names are noun-derived to still, to a certain extent, behave like nouns.

Described the A class of verbs... in four pages... only 4+ more classes left to go! Also decided that "My name is X" should be expressed using "I X call (middle voice)" = "I call myself X". Now I'm not sure whether names should decline for cases and such. Is there any n...

Re: Does your conlang satisfy you?

Most of the time, I am satisfied with Adranik. Sometimes I wish it was a bit more complex or less SAE in certain areas. I also really wish I had implemented a vowel harmony system earlier in its development, now it is literally screaming for one. In fact, the "non-existant" vowel harmony h...

Re: What did you accomplish today?

Added the passive and middle voice to verb structure... still not sure what I'm going to use the middle voice for though. Probably reflexives. The conlang still needs a verb to be, it so far has been dealing without! Grammar is now up to 47 pages total, 37 discounting corpus + title/contents (36 wit...

Many languages handle existential statements via a similar pattern to possessive statements. Mandarin does this (examples from tatoeba):
