Technically, by definition, a language is a system of communication. If you can't communicate effectively in it, then it's just a bunch of words that follow a certain pattern.

Yeah, they're tricky. And then there's how you can have a 22-letter word with two syllables because 18 of the letters are silent. Looks cool when it's written down though.Theta wrote:I love it as well, but I can never remember how to pronounce all those vowel clusters o:

Re: Linguistic Resources
I don't suppose anyone could point me in the direction of a repository of audio files which give examples of the different sounds represented by different IPA symbols? I can do the most basic sounds, but sounds in certain places of articulation can be difficult for me to conceptualize or produce on...

Re: What did you accomplish today?
I approve of this thread's revival.
Today, I completed some intensive research into morphology and syntax, and I've created a basic skeleton for my phonology, which I plan to flesh out relatively soon. Might work more on navigating the word-order this evening if I have the time/brainpower.

I seem to be pretty alone in this opinion, but I adore Irish Gaelic.

Re: The greatest conlang!
You mean Rohirric, which is barely attested? Huh, I heard it was referred to as Rohanese. And yes, that one. Doesn't really count as a full language, but the minute bits and pieces that exist sound quite nice. Why does everyone say "Elvish"? I try to avoid using it, but I'm not aware of a...

Re: The greatest conlang!
Well, Tolkien's Elvish is probably the most popular conlang in artistic media. I'm sure that's how a lot of people discovered conlanging as a legitimate pursuit.
Although I'd have to admit, I like the sound of his Rohanese better than his Elvish. Elvish just has more resources.

I'm a big fan of D'ni, from the Myst series. Especially when it's sung, like on the Revelations soundtrack. Sounds way too awesome - probably my favorite.
And I have to give Sindarin a mention too... LOTR was the first place I'd ever seen an invented language, so it kind of got me hooked on Conlang.

Re: Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
as for the SOV, you could probably affix auxilliaries onto it. And what type of gerund do you mean? There are quite a few ways of expressing a gerund True - auxiliaries would come in really handy! As for the types of gerunds I'm having issues with, it's stuff like "the dog's barking is annoyin...

Re: Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Got one question: At the moment, I'm trying to figure out the usage of an SOV word order. As I'm still developing my conlang's vocabulary and grammar, I'm mostly just playing around with translating English into an SOV format to get a feel for it, which is fine with simple sentences, but when it com...
