Re: Conworlders' religious influences on conworlds

A war in Heaven? I've sometimes wondered if all these gods and goddesses and pantheons from different religions are real, and they're finding propihets to advertise themselves on Earth, trying to win over all the adherents -- much like different fast food chains going in capitalist competition with...

Re: Conworlders' religious influences on conworlds

What climate problems would jimsonweed (e.g.) have? Primarily, the colder temperature, but I suspect I could have it 'imported' down from the northern-most clans, who have it warmer. Henbane seems possibly more willing to live in the cold, if less strong in its deleriant effect. I suppose I can use...

Anradh, I want to hear more about that psychological horror! And about the entheogens! Hmm. Ulterior motive, eldin? :P I haven't decided what the entheogens actually are, primarily because I'm having difficulty finding naturally occurring deleriant chemicals that would grow in the correct climate—I...

Re: Conworlders' religious influences on conworlds

Uh... Hmm. There are three major ethnic groups (names, as ever, in constant revision), that I'll dub Toms, Dicks and Harrys. Toms and Dicks are from the same ethnic family, and their religions are directly descended from a common ancestor, as are their languages. In turn, the Toms' religion has a ma...

I remember a discussion about Warhammer a while back (some years now, I think) where the hobby was disparaged pretty strongly... naturally, I've taken it back up! :D

Re: higher pergentage of land?

It depends on the distribution of the land, but, generally speaking, that's true. That said, arid and semi-arid regions are capable of supporting larger populations of people than the equivalent surface area of ocean. If the goal is more people/civilisations then that's the best strategy. When I mad...

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

English (slang): smashing -- good
Gàidhlig: 's math sin -- that's good

For a long time I was convinced this was a borrowing, but apparently I was wrong... though being a popular folk etymology, it seems I'm not the first to have been so.

I was also a way of looking at how the continents around the poles would actually look given the distortions caused by the equirectangular projection. Velkasta looked a lot different before I started converting the map to a "spherical" projection and it took a fair amount of trail and err...

It would be more accurate to say that I dabble in Gaelic, but I should be able to answer any orthography questions you have, and my girlfriend speaks it as her first language, so anything I don't know, she will.

how did you manage body decorations in your conculture... Warriors scar 'bites' -- semicircles of five dots -- into their shoulders and upper arms to represent kills in battle, so named after the tradition of collecting a slain warrior's teeth as proof. These grisly trophies will be attached to a l...

How does your culture perceive manual labour? Is it degrading or, on the contrary, valued and honoured? This varies by caste. Commoners are the manual labourers of the society in almost all circumstances, and a willingness to work hard and efficiently is considered an admirable trait amongst them, ...
