Re: False cognates
可愛い kawaii is etymologically Chinese, so this is a true cognate, not a false one. Shift in pronunciation from kawayui below.[1] The kanji spelling 可愛い is an example of ateji (当て字), and uses an irregular reading of 愛. The phonological resemblance to Chinese 可愛 (kě'ài, “lovable”) is coincidental. Not...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
So I got a project that's V2. My question is whether the slot before the verb can be considered filled with just a (polar question) particle or is there some theoretical requirement to have a regular constituent there too?

There is no 'Old Baltic' language with scripts so a modern language must be used to give evidence of the Baltic branch. If there were no Latin left, I think Sardinian would appear in those reconstructions. Of course, Lithuanian is more conservative than Latvian. I think they'd just reconstruct Lati...

The innovation of new genders without involving any classifiers is always neat.
Re: SlideWing
So on to independent pronouns. Independent pronouns exist for first, second and third persons (distinct from demonstratives). There is a lack of marking for case and notably number. What is marked includes gender for all three persons: masculine and feminine for all three, neuter also for third. All...

It's just an interim goofy name helped for inclusion by including a random bodypart.

Consistently head-first. I'll get there.

So I totally dropped this to go thru several major redos. This will be a nice spot to keep everything in my notes consolidated. To get the phonemes out of the way: /m n̼ n ŋ/ /p b̥ t̼ d̼̥ t d̥ k g̥/ /f v̥ θ̼ ð̥̼ s z̥ x/ /r/ /l j w/ The distinction on obstruents is [+/− spread glottis]. /ɪ i͡ɪ i͡ːɪ ʊ...

So the old vowels: I was never sure on (æ ɒ). Anyhow, boring. /i y u ɪ ʏ ʊ e ø ə o ɛ œ ɔ (æ) a (ɒ) a͡i a͡u/ New vowels not shown are for those SlideWing posts that never materialized. The teaser is the high and mid vowels have narrow diphthongs long and short in place of simple long vowels. ¡ uːʊ ! ...

Re: Yay or Nay?
I have two scenarios. Each is predicated (ha) on adjectives inflecting for gender and also on having distinct attributive-vs-predicative forms. In the first scenario, the predicative forms inflect for gender like attributive adjectives. Predicative nouns then take a proclitic pronoun which express g...

Re: What did you accomplish today?
I'm liking this revision of my Lexember '16 project vowels. Before, it was just 15 monophthongs thru 5 heights & rounding with straightforward length and the two blandest diphthongs. Currently the system is still large with 22 units, but the distribution is much better: 7 short and 3 long monoph...

Wikipedia says How they arose is not known, but it is generally assumed that they developed from sequences of non-click consonants, as they are found allophonically for doubly articulated consonants in West Africa (Ladefoged 1968), where /tk/ sequences overlap at word boundaries in German (Fuchs 200...
