Re: Con-Script Development Centre

Looking weird aside, is it realistic that people would write like that? It makes everything harder to write (you need a protractor just to get started), it makes it much harder to gauge when to start a new line (because the intuitive 'width' of a character along its axis will often be smaller than ...

Re: CBB Conlang Relay XIV - IT BEGINS (late signups accepted)

To be fair, Osroene uses a lot of clitics or clitic-like "words" that are written separately, so that probably contributed mostly to the increase (but I suppose the end results will tell...!)

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I can't give you an exact example, but it certainly seems plausible to me. Look at English, and the way the periphrastic present has supplanted the the simple present in almost all contexts. We could easily imagine it going further and relegating the simple only to the habitual aspect, which it's n...

Re: Večʼapruga

I think that a) just because most IE languages developed in such a way that disfavoured extensive ablaut, doesn't mean Veca'pruga can't, especially if it was isolated early on (and also especially since PIE itself was full of ablaut). Also, b) just because that particular ablaut isn't present in the...

Re: Večʼapruga

I'm liking all of this so far - very much IE but unique at the same time. For your questions (bearing in mind I'm no expert either): a) For the Greek loans, it might depend on whether they are mostly "learned" loans, in which case spelling/archaic pronunciations (i.e. stops) might be more ...

Re: Osroene: A Possible Euphratic IE Language

The mediopassive As in Hittite and other Anatolian, the PIE mediopassive has survived (and expanded) in Osroene but has seen considerable levelling and innovations. Synchronically, it is only semi-productive by the time of Osroene, but many verbs fall into the “mediopassive” conjugation. These verb...

I'd like to join with Osroene. Could I also be placed at the top (or near) due to upcoming time constraints if that's not a problem for anyone else? Thank you!

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

A question about verb tense/aspect for Osroene: Would it be plausible for a perfect form to be synthetic, while the preterite/simple past is newer and is composed of 2 parts (deriving from an earlier participle)? In more detail concerning intransitive verbs, the perfect is an "original" in...

Re: Osroene: A Possible Euphratic IE Language

The Mysterious Osroene Perfects Osroene perfects are somewhat of a mystery. While they display characteristic PIE features (ablaut in plural stems), and somewhat recognizable person endings, their exact origin has caused considerable debate. The perfect is characterized by <k> or <g>, and the perso...

Re: Osroene: A Possible Euphratic IE Language

Verbs are finally taking shape... The Imperfect Osroene’s imperfect ultimately derives from PIE mi-presents , with possibly some interference from m-preterites, due to the early loss of the final -i (already lost in Euphratic). The imperfective in Osroene generally has a non-past meaning, but with v...

Re: Osroene: A Possible Euphratic IE Language

Verbs (I have been putting off trying to untangle the chaos of verbs in PIE and Anatolian, so the following is a rough sketch of the main developments.) The Osroene verbal system shows several IE traits, although its precise prehistory is quite murky and it has, expectedly, developed a system quite...

Re: Osroene: A Possible Euphratic IE Language

I love the Coptic alphabet! I've been trying to come up with a conlang that uses it. Looks great. [:)] Thanks! I wasn't sold at first since Osroene has little to do with Coptic, but it's growing on me as a stand-in! The more archaic-looking nature of it (compared to modern Greek fronts) adds to the...

Re: Osroene: A Possible Euphratic IE Language

Orthography Update I have decided to use the Coptic alphabet instead of Modern Greek as Osroene would have developed its own modified version of Greek to better suit its phonology, and Coptic provides a good stand-in, having several letters for phonemes found in Osroene. Notably: <ϣ> for /ʃ/ and <ϩ...

Re: Osroene: A Possible Euphratic IE Language

Pronouns (Work in progress as usual). While Osroene's pronoun system does show both PIE and Anatolian traits, the overall system has taken a more Semitic-influenced direction – unsurprising due to it being spoken in the region for millennia. Although Anatolian is known for its pre-verbal clitic cha...

Re: Osroene: A Possible Euphratic IE Language

Some changes to the above and more numbers... "1" is now <ωια / ōia> /ɑːja/, likely via *Hoy-(k)wo. I wasn't entirely happy with "8". It is now <στγυκνωσ / ṣṭyknōs> /stˤəknɑs/. It's etymology isn't totally clear, although the second element looks like a form of "10". It...

Re: Osroene: A Possible Euphratic IE Language

Not too many developments to report (although I may rethink the verbal system as I'm not entirely happy with it), but I have given some thought to the the numerals 1-10... Numerals 1–10 Several of the numbers can be mostly transparently derived from PIE, but a few others are more puzzling. The Euphr...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

This is along the lines of what I was thinking. Could this to analogise to all aspects, or would that be asking too much? I think some Iranic and Neo-Aramaic(s) use the ergative only in the past/perfective forms, but I think it would be reasonable for the ergative-marked forms to spread into non-pa...
