Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

This recently came up elsewhere, and I was shown to not have quite as much knowledge as my confidence afforded. So I pose the question here: in an ergative language, or a language or scenario within a language that places greater importance on the patient, will the patient precede the agent? Will t...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

For general tendencies you can look at the Sonority Sequencing Principle and the Syllable Contact Law. Of course exceptions to these make a conlang more 'interesting' in a way. I usually think of onset clusters and coda clusters first, the combination of which give me my medial clusters. Then I exc...

@Shemtov: has it been placed in the Hindenburgae genus?
Spoiler:
Edit: I looked it up. It’s Perucetus colossus. To me that suggests its bones were found in Peru.

Re: It only snows in the north, but it rains everywhere.

Are we translating a sentence paraphrasable as “the North is the only place it snows”?
“It snows [only in the North]”?

Or as “in the North the only form of precipitation is snow”?
“In the North it [only snows]”?
Or “It [only snows] in the North”?

Or maybe each?

I believe that on Solomon Linda’s original recording it was “mbubwe”, not “awimmaway”.

(Not original with me! You can find a version on Reddit.)

Q: How do you say “non-binary” in Spanish?

A: Either “no binario” or “no binaria”, depending on the gender of the person you’re describing or referring to.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

So one thing I'm working with for a new project is a play on the triconsonantal roots of Semitic languages, where most verbs (and a lot of other vocab) are derived from a small collection of root consonants, and one (to two) root vowels. For instance pukw means "to write," and can be deri...

“Speaks this conlang” vs. “cannot speak this conlang”, maybe? ooooh, interesting You (and anyone else on the CBB!) are welcome to take it and run with it. Just don’t hinder others (e.g. me) from doing the same (although it appears I have some difficulty “running” with conlingustic things!). Anyone ...

I have never heard of a language that is both analytic and fusional.
Are you planning one of each type?
Or you just have not chosen between those types yet?

Uduk has two genders without sematic cores. https://helda.helsinki.fi/items/5ba4f0ec-1c4d-4515-a2ea-200f2e387eb2 But I think a semantic core could be interesting. It should just be something else than sex or animacy. Rational vs non-rational, maybe? ‘Speaks this conlang” vs. “cannot speak this conl...

Re: Which conlangs are you working on and/or still plan to work on?

I am planning to work on another Heartlang in the distant future and succeed this time. Also, another conlang that roughly has the syntax of [Aspect particle] [pronominal/proper noun subject] [Verb] [Adverbs] [Nominal Subject] [Object]. The [Nominal Subject] is supposed to be a common noun, not a p...

Step-cousin and step-step-cousin

I looked up “step-cousin”, and it appears that at least some amateur genealogists have agreed that A step-cousin is any one of the following : A step-parent’s sibling’s child, or A parent’s step-sibling’s child, or A parent’s sibling’s step-child. That seems to be the consensus. There’s less agreeme...
