Re: Surprising cognates

Of course there's all the cognates thrown up by the Plains Algonquian languages like Arapaho and Cheyenne, for instance: Ar bíí "buffalo" ~ Ch mehe ~ Cree môswa "moose" Ar henéécee "buffalo bull" ~ Ch hotóá‘e ~ Cree iyâpêw "buck" Ar nóubee "fly" ~ Cr...

The language's retroflexes came about due to broad consonants, such as [ŋ], appearing before [ʏ(ː)] when it was variable [y(ː)~ø̞(ː)]. Is [t̪ˠ → t̪] or [t̪ˠ → ʈ] more likely? This affects the other dentialveolars, such as [z̪ˠ], as well. Having retroflexes appear before front rounded vowels only se...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

One suggestion: Maybe have front vowels do some palatalisation befor...

Re: What did you accomplish today?

Well I've finally got round to redoing Proto-Muyan, I was really unhappy with the previous version and now I've decided I'm stripping down the verbal morphology and doing Papuan-style light verb constructions, which has been on my bucket list of things to use for ages.

The New and Improved Proto-Muyan. *p *t *ʈ *c *k *q *pʰ *tʰ *ʈʰ *cʰ *kʰ *qʰ *m *n *ŋ *w *l *j The series labeled as alveolar and retroflex were more likely dental-laminal and apical respectively. The stopped nature of the palatals is debatable. *iː *ʊ *uː *ɛː *ə *ɒː *iː *uː *ɛː *ɒː were full vowels,...
