Re: WI: Latin ISOTed to Japan
It's interesting to imagine Japan under the influence of a mini Roman Empire rather than China, but unless the Romans conquered Japan, it would be a mix of Roman and Chinese at most. I wonder if the Romans would become tributaries of China.

Re: WI: Latin ISOTed to Japan
Keep in mind that the oldest attested form of the Japanese language comes form the 8th century. Its phonology, particularly the vowels, are not fully determined. The language may or may not have vowel harmony. It would be hard to determine how this would influence Latin. Old Japanese also had a very...

Re: Today I learned ...
A line on a vowel marked what is written with n not even a nasal vowel in some old orthographies. Maybe this is rather what I suppose. I must check again. Yes, this was the case in various orthographies around the 13th century. You definitely see this in Old Spanish and Old French, e.g. OSp /ˈantes...

There's always GTA, which bothered me at first when it was applied to Grand Theft Auto...because for me, it always meant Greater Toronto Area. "The GTA" still does, anyway.

Re: Star Trek Ferengi Language by Timothy Miller and David Salo from 1995
Since you say that you're not that much into Star Trek conlangs, I find it curious that you have run a Facebook group for the past two years dedicated to the Okrand languages, the most famous and well-developed of which is obviously Klingon. What motivates you to run a group centered on a language y...

Re: On making a conscript that doesn't suck.
But a lot of things that I look for in logographic writing systems, I discovered within the past 15 years. It's all these little things that nobody even knows to look for. The point of my reply is that I specialize in conscripts and logographic writing systems and that most people really just scrat...

It would be nice. I noticed that almost all the posts of my Khmer script thread are gone. All the posts with lessons anyway. And my Learn Japanese thread starts at lesson 11 now. I hope there is some chance for these to be recovered.

Measuring from the latest post makes sense. I suspected as much, I just misunderstood your post above.

I'm just trying to see if fixed stress can coexist with pitch accent and how so, if it can. If you are asking, if fixed stress and pitch accent can coappear, absolutely yes. I have been, at last, learning Swedish pitch accents. It's a very simple example https://learningswedish.se/courses/1/pages/2...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I mean, in English we can just say 'three four-hundredths' for 3/400. So if you wanted 1/27, you could say 'one twenty-and-seventh' or simply 'one twenty-seventh'. No, because one twenty seventh or "seventh ten two (one)" would be interpreted as 20/7. However, I'm not entirely sure I've u...

I have two language families that occupy the same geographical area in a conworld. Although they are not related, for some reason or another they both form the passive voice through reduplication of the initial syllable of the stem. This was not actually planned, as I think I unconsciously reused t...

Re: Some Miscellaneous Realism Questions
4. What would classifiers come from? They would come from regular words. Think of phrases like one sheet of paper, one stick of butter; it's not a major jump to get from there to phrases like one sheet of towel, one stick of pencil...and once you're there, it's only one more small jump to phrases l...

Re: Lesson/Guide Requests
Use lots of rebus writing, to the point where there may be as many phonetic signs as logographic signs. Don't merge multiple signs into single compound characters like Chinese does; leave them independent and string them together. It's not really a guide, but I have made a language with a sort of Eg...
