Re: You
Well, I'm going through the trouble of making a computer font out of the textura hand used in the Hatton gospels and the proto-gothic hand used in the Textus Roffensis.

Re: What did you accomplish today?
I've been constructing fonts lately (using a computer program and a few manuscript photos). It took me forever finding the two hands I'd be pleased with, but I think I found the perfect match (a textura used in the Hatton Gospels, ca. 1160, Kent and a proto-gothic minuscule used in the Textus Roffen...

Either it's “I'm just gonna use the most common name in both the example and the translation, regardless of meaning” or Iyionaku just made a mistake. It's a mischief, either way.shimobaatar wrote:Also, "Pedro" = "John"?

Re: Lesson/Guide Requests
How about beginning from the start, defining the term “romlang”? Then you'd go into the topics of geographical extent and (maybe) realism. After that, you could start with the phonology (vowels first, consonant next). Then you'd deal with the morphology, pointing to the changes from Latin to Romance...

I do it in stages, so I can observe the inflectional changes and, yes, loanwords can come in multiple times at different stages.Ælfwine wrote:Somewhat of an open ended question, but how do you guys usually conlang when going from an ancestor language to a modern language? Do you do it in stages or all at once?

I managed to create 3 more or less acceptable letters (<a>, <b>, <c>) for a font that should look like the script used in the Hatton Gospels.

Re: Is modern grammar writing simply better?
Actually, the latter transcription system (from Carl Faulmann's Das Buch der Schrift , second edition of 1880) was clear enough, so I could reconstruct the pronunciation of ca. 1880s England-English. And I own a copy of that book (a 2012 reprint), so I could get used to that transcription method aft...

Re: Is modern grammar writing simply better?
My biggest gripe is with grammars that use nonstandard conventions. A lot of old grammar and phonology texts have some weird transcriptions before the IPA was standardized (like ħ for ç), and even now I come across a paper or two that is well aware of the IPA but chooses not to use it for some esot...

Writing alternative lyrics for the 1300s song Bryd one Breere (Bird on a Briar). Since they are connected to my conworld Úrageard and (and I again use early southwestern Middle English), I think this gets a free pass. Status : 3/4 of stanza 1 done.
