For some reason I only just now noticed your post. [¬.¬]
With a language as obscure as Sámi, you might want to post a translation, cause I have no idea what you might be saying.
EDIT: Well, I kinda do. But a translation would still be nice.

How on earth did you guys learn Sámi? I mainly discovered it listening to Mari Boine's songs. [<3]

I haven't listened to Mari Boine. I did miss her concert by a week in St. Petersburg, though. It was disappointing. I discovered Sámi through Sofia Jannok and Niko Valkeapää.

I mostly used this site for most of my grammatical worries. There was a page on there - I've forgotten which, though - that had quite a bit of example sentences. In addition, I've found a relatively good, searchable wordlist here. Also try the same guy's odds and ends page. I suppose Freelang's dictionary is okay too, even if it just mixes orthographies and even different Sámi languages in. OAHPA! is good for conjugation, declension, and (illusory) conversational practice.

I think MONOBA has a textbook or something on North Sámi in Finnish.

Living in South Sápmi I should reasonably know some of the South Sami language, but unfortunately I don't. (Not even a majority of the South Sami people know their own language.) Well, I hope I can contribute to this thread in some other way. :wat:

Do you have any resources (in English), perhaps?

Nope, but my county library is probably the main resource centre of South Sami in the world. Maybe I should take a look at their inventory. South Sami is usually not the Sami language that non-Sami students come into contact with. Which is sad because it's considered the most archaic Sami language.

'mun' is both nominative and genitive?

AFAICT, you have a singular subject in both of these sentences, so I'm fairly sure the correct form of the verb would be lea (leat being the corresponding plural form). Also, at least Wikipedia gives the Sami form simply as Reykjavík.

Quote:
Ollut sánit leat seammalágánat go suomas.

I think that should be just ollu sánit, but I could be badly wrong here. [:P] Still, I don't think I've ever seen the form ollut anywhere, and even if ollu does have a plural form, I'd expect it to be in the weak grade (i.e. olut). Also, I'm not sure if suopma can be used as the name of the language; I've always seen suomagiella (and that is at least what the Giellatekno dictionary gives).

Quote:
Mun barggan oahpaheddjin gielaskuvllas geas oahpahan islánddagiela olgoriikalaččaide

Possibly a typo, but there probably shouldn't be diphthong monophthongization in the form oahpaheaddjin here. And isn't gii (: geas) usually used just when referring to people?

Now, I'm a bit rusty, in addition to which my better dictionary is currently in Helsinki while I myself am in Tartu, so I couldn't check all the word meanings and forms as well as I might've liked to... So my notes here might be worth taking with a little grain of salt. Hope this helps a bit, though. [:P]

Hahaha. I love how I've never been to this thread before, and that I don't really know any more words than mun (and dun?) and lea- and a couple more and I just happen to find something that looks fishy to me and it's actually right. I can't even compose a sentence in Sami. I'd say something like 'I am a...', but then realise that I don't even know a single noun. Unless... 'fish' is... guolli or something, isn't it? Mun lean guolli?

Don. Then again, I've seen even our professor make this mistake while listing North Sami pronouns once, so you're in good company. [:P]

That's the correct way to express this idea in North Sami, yes. Although if you ever find yourself in a position where you actually need to express this idea, I'm afraid you may have trouble finding a North Sami speaker qualified to help you. [:S]
