Nah, it's just that the Austronesian/trigger alignment is underused and wrongly explained by most conlangers ;)

No. There are such things as triggerlangs without cases.

No. The trigger morphosyntactic alignment is NOT primarily a focus system. It is entirely independent. A triggerlang can have focus systems, while others may not.
For example, your "pretend this is English/SVO" example is cute, but it does not demonstrate the purpose of triggers at all. It's merely a focus system there.

I was simplifying the explanation of Philippine alignment. I may note in Episode 3 that fact, and an in-depth look will be a future episode.
