Vielleicht ist „Ich bin ein Idiot" bloß geläufiger, und nicht zwangsläufig die einzig zugelassene Form. Es war mehr mein Bauchgefühl. Ich habe die beiden Sätze gegoogelt, und „Ich bin ein Idiot“ kommt zweimal häufiger vor.

Die Sätze ohne den unbestimmten Artikel weisen für mich auf eine angeborene Eigenschaft (Muttersprachler) oder Beruf (Arzt) hin. Wie gesagt, es ist mein Bauchgefühl und ich habe keine Ahnung, wie richtig ich hier bin.

Maybe „Ich bin ein Idiot“ is simply more common, and not necessarily the only accepted form. It was more of a gut feeling. I have googled for both sentences, and „Ich bin ein Idiot“ returns twice as many hits.

For me, the sentences without the indefinite article hint at an inherent quality (native speaker) or at a profession (doctor). As I said, it’s my gut feeling talking and I have no idea how correct it is.
