It's a very harsh-sounding language, that's for certain.

There's nothing wrong with the sound of German. It's a very soft-sounding language.

I agree. Just as any other language, a man with a harsh voice can make it sound harsh. Alas, most non-Germans probably have just a small number of German speakers in mind when they think of the sound of German.

I'm gonna' have to ask for a definition of 'beautiful' here... since I'd put 'stylo' above 'pen' and 'kuli' above 'stylo'.

German sounds harsh and evil when you can't speak it, but if you can, it just sounds freakin' cool. And it sounds just as feminine as any other language when spoken by a woman.

Half of the crazy shit in German has English cognates anyway.

You want an ugly lang, go for French. It looks ugly and sounds ugly too.

I do define German as being harsh, but it's not harsh in a bad way. It's a beautiful harshness.

One language that I would classify as "harsh" would be Mandarin Chinese.

The phonemes aren't harsh, but...when I hear it, there's a lot of odd stops (not the linguistic meaning of "stop") in the lang. It seems very "rough" and not flowing at all. Maybe this is because I'm just not used to hearing it yet.

This. German and French are both like marshmallows. French is like a lightly warmed marshmallow, but German is like a burnt one. But both taste sweet.

I beg to differ. Mandarin does have a "choppy" feel to be sure, but it does sound very warm, and the tones give it a touch of spice.

German is a beautiful language! Anyone who's ever heard Bach knows this.

You, guys, are all out of the field... -_-

These posters aren't even comparing the beauty of the words, but how funny they sound. It never said German was ugly.

It's also supposed to be funny, hence the topic title. -_^

I really can't avoid debates on the internet, as I see. -_- Just watch, laugh, then comment. Don't start complaining about French or German being ugly. -_-

(Yes, a shitload of "OMG, people can be so reckless smileys".) -_-

---

Also, to show how stupid all of this is: (:D)

LOOK, the German one is the ugliest, only because of the face!!!!

Again, I don't think that one is very funny. I, personally, find the German <Taxi> much nicer than the French <taxi>. The German is much more lovely.

I can't agree. Spanish <taxi> is really horrible to me. Even then orthography is terrible when compared to, say, the Hungarian <taxi>.

Heh, I just finished reading "Is that a fish in your ear?", and it also covers the eskimo-snow-words-myth, and counter exemplifies it with "How many words do we have for coffee?". Because if you walk into a StarBucks and ask for a "coffee", the teller won't have any idea what you want [:P]

The Wiktionary entry on Schadenfreude gives this:

Descendants:
    schadenfreude (English)
    skadefryd (Norwegian)
    skadeglädje (Swedish)

Funny.

The very best thing with it is how they actually provide *translations* ... *into* .... *ENGLISH* what the fuck is wrong here?

They don't give translations, rather explanations.

No, those are translations. A translation need not be word for word, in fact shouldn't be word-for-word. It should be words strung together to convey the same idea.

Well then, the definition of translation they have in mind is different from yours. They mean words which don't have an English equivalent.
