I highly doubt that, and if it does, screw that shit, I'm moving to Britain.

Modicone: Split from the How natlangs look in the future! thread. Locked because it's nonproductive arguing.

Any rational thinking whatsoever behind this rash decision?

Why would it have to be for that to happen :wat:?

Edit: Hmm. I think I'm gonna work on a future Swedish (based on my Swedish, obviously) as a response to Mekoshan and the other future English langs out there.

By all means. Just remember, there, you'll be the minority too.

I know a fair amount of British English that ISN'T obviously exxagerated and stereotypical.

Whatever the case, British English is STILL English.

[+1]

And besides, the differences between different British dialects can be as big as that between BE and other kinds of English. Remember that RP speakers are a rather small minority in Britain.

Well, that's nice, but accent isn't what I was prodding him about. The fact is, he is having a political reaction to a linguistic [read: demographic] change and that may suit his perspective, but I think it's rather silly.

So, any rational reasons for your (conditional) decision?

I think it can be safely asserted that rationality only accounts for about a tenth of his decision making paradigm...most especially, it would seem, when there are 'dirty Hispanics/Latinos' in question.

Dear lord, now you're accusing me of racism.

I don't hate Hispanics or Latinos. I live in goddamn San Anotnio, where there's massive hispanic community. I merely would prefer living in a place where my native language is the most common sk I can communicate easier. Is that so wrong?

Actually, I wasn't, but now that you mention it...

Chagen wrote:

Just their language? Enough to uproot yourself because of its pervasiveness, it would seem.

Chagen wrote:

And how many of them do not speak Spanish? (At least at home and with relatives)

According to the 2010 census non-Hispanic whites only make up 26% of the population, so you're already a minority...why not go to the UK now and save yourself some waiting around.

Chagen wrote:

If you listen to yourself you're not making any sense...a place does not determine the native language, the person does, so if the majority of people in a region speak one lang over another, that becomes the default native language. Do you see?

Chagen wrote:

I am tempted to say yes, but that would rob you of the realization that what you're saying is you'd rather move than be a minority in a place where that is already the case...silly, wouldn't you say?

Why is it that if anything at all can be even remotely construed as racist, it invariably is, over any other interpretation?
Why was "Chagen hates Hispanics!" a more probable conclusion than "Chagen can't speak Spanish."?

You're right, maybe he doesn't like Spanish because of its verb conjugation and lack of dental clicks, which is why he wants to change continents in the event that it overtakes English as the dominant language wherever he might live.

Yeah, sure, but can't you at least admit that his reaction to the likely influence of Spanish on English is a little absurd?

You don't think the experience of being a member of a minority would teach you some fucking humility or otherwise be a beneficial thing ? I can actually recommend it, it does wonders to one's ability to reason about ethnicity-related things.

3. Don't put words in other people's mouths. Or thoughts in their heads. Occasional misunderstandings are inevitable in all human communication, and especially on the internet - but you can reduce the chances of them happening by trying to stick to responding to what people have actually said. Don't make further extrapolations on what someone "really" means or why they're saying what they are, not to mention broader generalizations on what kind of person they are. It's extremely rude and, at least unless you have a degree in psychology, very likely to go wrong. And by the way, this includes extrapolations made based on things like someone's gender, religion, ethnicity, etc.

Also I'm giving a warning to Sano and Systemzwang both. You have been warned at least twice in the past few days and need to show better conduct.
