Heya everybody!

I've just sauntered over to the ZBB, and, after posting in the relevent thread itself, I posted up a notice thread about what I thought might be going on. However, I've been informed that non-mods can't even SEE the board anymore, so here is what I wrote:

---------

"It seems like something's happened - it feels like I'm the only survivor walking into a ghost town - and I think I have to at least put up a sign.

I think Zompist has closed the board. I'm guessing that from a) the sign at the top of the board saying "this board is currently disabled", and b) Zomp's strange behaviour in this thread (http://zbb.spinnwebe.com/viewtopic.php? ... 7&start=75), particularly his cryptic final comment, and c) the fact that nobody has posted since that final comment, other than myself.

I'm guessing that he's done something akin to locking the entire board, but that for some reason, as a mod, I still have a key. Or maybe I'm not actually posting at all, I don't know. I don't know what's happened, or why it's happened.

If you've read his comment in that thread, you know as much as I do. I don't know whether the board will be back, and, if so, when it will be back. I'm guessing that if his mood continues as it is, if he ever lets you post again, it'll only be after banning me, but fuck it, I've been given a position of responsibility in the community, petty though it may be, and so help me I'm damn well going to act responsibly. Somebody ought to.

So, like I say, I don't know if the ZBB will be back. If it is going to come back, I don't know what the criteria for that might be ("Zomp calms down", "Zomp thinks we've learnt our lesson (for what, not lynching Travis ourselves?)", or "the attack site issue has been fixed", or "all the problems have been fixed" or what). I'm hoping this will just be a very temporary thing, but I don't know. Hopefully, if Zompist comes back and reads this, he'll have the decency to put up a proper message somewhere.

In the meantime, if people want information and/or hobby-community-stuff, I suggest they look at the CBB, or on irc (sorry, don't have the details to hand). They may also be interested in the Conlang Mailing List.

Hope (though not sure I expect) to see you on the other side.

P.S. If the fact mentioned at the beginning are all a weird coincidence and nothing is wrong and I've just made a fool of myself: well, sorry about that. But I hope you can all see why I felt I had to."

-------------------

--------------------------

OK, since then, i've found out the board is totally down for non-mods, which reduces the odds of coincidence to nearly zero.

It also means you can't read the link. Fortunately, a fellow mod has produced a transcript of That Fatefull Thread (about the zbb being listed as infected). It can be found here: http://pastebin.com/qGVy6acP

The key comment by zompist, after banning a few people, is this: "Not interested in dealing with more assholery. When there's news you'll find out somewhere. Pat yourselves on the back for making a bad situation worse."

I'm optimistically putting faith on that "when", and hoping the board will be back, but I know no more than that. I've thought about e-mailing Zomp, but I suspect it'll just make him more pissed off right now.

----

I'll also update you by telling you that you can reach the irc channel on Sorcerynet, at #isharia.

----

hope the admin doesn't object too strongly to the post about another website. I hope he'll excuse me, in light of the unusual circumstances.

I thought it was just because of the SOPA stuff. But you'd think he'd say something first.

I'm still getting a virus warning whenever I try to access the ZBB. I've no idea what's been going on. [:|]

Ah! Well, to take a step back, google flagged it up as a virus warning, apparently because a few months ago some people were redirected somewhere. There doesn't appear to be that problem anymore. It seems google are just very slow to flag things.

Anyway, some people suggested that having the warning might deter people from visiting, and that maybe he should do something about it. He took the suggestion rather violently, and now the board is only viewable by mods.

I think it got hacked again rather than Google reacting belatedly, since Zompist found a malicious .htaccess file the other week that would redirect to the malware site we had problems with before. That is, if we assume Spinn did an accurate job (and I think so), that file has not been sitting there for months or Google (and other search engines that the redirect in the .htaccess reacted to) would've noticed it earlier when indexing the board.

I guess I'm not completely unguilty either because I posted in bold print that Zomp or Spinn should take action or people wouldn't come to the ZBB anymore due to the warning, and I quoted from the Google warning site about the Webmasters Tools thing that allows you to have the site checked again – because as I understood it, once a site is blacklisted, the admin has to apply to get it reapproved. However, with the removal of the .htaccess file, the issue seemed to be done with for Zompist. I'm not sure he actually realized the security warning thing was still going on and maybe won't fix itself eventually. What follows from there is the discussion Salmoneous linked to: Different people said more or less what I had said before (but with more insistence), but Zompist appears to have been confusing this with the comparingly minor issue of bringing the avatars back that people had been going on about tauntingly for months. At least that's my interpretation of what was going on.

I'm glad I could get info from you guys. This caught me totally flat-footed... And as Ossicone said, at first I thought it was some kind of SOPA protest in the spinn domain.

Also, I'm kinda shocked to see zompist so offensive. I didn't take him for the sort of guy that would burst out like that, specially for such trivial forum stuff. Is he going through any hard stuff personally or something like that?

Meanwhile, hello, CBB :|

Gosh, I wonder why that might be. It's not like Salm or I had provided any information [:S]

Yeah, now that I was able to read the copy-paste of the post I see your worries. TBH I don't see why he has fixed it yet. But I probably should not get involved in that discussion.

But anyone wanting to talk about conlangs and/or linguistics is welcome here. [:D]

Man, this sucks.

ZBB may have had some....rude members, but I did appriciate how it was more focused on conworlding than this forum (which, conversely, is more focused on conlanging).

Anyway,

What the hell?

So he basically threw a tantrum like a little kid because some people were worried about the site?

Boo-fucking-hoo, you might actually have to do work, mister Zompist, that's no reason to explode and act so immaturely.

Stop the personal attacks.

The House Rules wrote:
1. First and foremost: No flaming. In some places on the net, it's apparently considered acceptable to resort to insults and name-calling at the slightest provocation, but this board isn't one of them. This doesn't mean you aren't allowed to disagree with people, of course. You do have the right to criticize other people's posts, as long as the criticism is constructive and aimed only at the content - but as soon as you start attacking them personally, you're crossing the line.

The "Serves 'em right" undertone there was not appropriate either, though.

I honestly wasn't intending that to sound patronising.

Apparently so, yes. Like people who post stuff like this...

That being said, this is surprising behavior from Zomp - but there might be a million possible reasons for it, so I'd wait and see how the situation develops before jumping to the most negative conclusions possible.

But jumping to negative conclusions is fun! You just rev up your motorcycle and hit the logic ramp as fast as possible! Whee...
