It's not "smrk" as in the tree, it's "smrk" as blowing your nose, and interjections don't have gender. So there! ;) Anyway, I've found that if I don't have a username that's obviously girlish, everyone thinks I'm a guy. I was expressing recognition that some people might be surprised that I'm actually a girl.
