Seem now I like Nightwish (with both Tarja and Anette since really they're different enough you might as well just call them a different band with the same name), Epica, Within Temptation and similar bands but what's really odd is that, in general, I'm not a huge fan of Tarja's solo work but I really can't tell why.

And a little something more... DEATH METAL!!! And obviously not forgetting... BLACK METAL!!!

Me neither. I admire Tarja as a vocalist, but I like her solo work as much as I like, say, Atargatis or Delain. I guess it's because her first solo album was more Symphonic Rock than any kind of metal. I hope her next album is going to be better.

Anyone here listen to mainstream? (I can tell I'm gonna get a lot of flak for this... :D)

Anyway, just got back from a party and this was the last song they were playing, so it's stuck in my head.

Nightwish and such is mainstream as far as I'm concerned. (and they've been mentioned)

Actually, I think that might just be it, i.e. she's a great vocalist. It'd be like if Tuomas decided to go solo and only played guitar. I mean that's not the only reason but it seems to be quite a big part of why I'm not a fan of her solo work, it's kind of... incomplete.

Haha, not to everyone's taste but considering that I can listen to Industrial Metal and stuff like Paramore on top of that I can't really say anything.

It definitely seems to be closer to mainstream in Continental Europe, and especially Scandinavia given how highly they rank in the album and single charts when they bring out something new, but in the UK they're not all that mainstream. I mean they probably have more listeners than say, Marduk or Behemoth but they're not widely known AFAICT.

Not atm, but I do like all kinds of music. I don't dislike an artist or song because others like it.

I am listening to Eterna Rimo - Mia Loko at the moment.

I know what you mean, I feel the same way. It's like her music lacks that Tuomas touch. :-(

Is Rammstein still considered Industrial? Cause I love them!

Mainstream like Nightwish or mainstream like Lady Gaga?

That's...interesting, but not really my cup of tea. Some of their other songs sounded interesting.

Now I'm listening to some System of a Down. I'm sure they're not obscure :p

They're "Neue Deutsche Härte" if you want to get technical I believe but they generally fall into industrial metal.

What's Härte? I know they define themselves as Tanzmetal (hope I wrote it right).

Currently I'm listening to Tacere - Deep Tears of Tragedy.

"Hardness" apparently. "New German Hardness" is how it seems to translate.

Now I'm listening too... Cake!
Soon to be the Morrowind soundtrack though, because I'll be playing it... xD

Haha, loving how the replies to Black and Death Metal are "yuck" and "ewww" :D

And yeah, Neue Deutsche Härte's a funny one. Generally speaking it's more or less a German language variety of Electronic/Industrial Rock/Metal. IIRC there are similar bands in the Industrial and Industrial Metal genres that use English lyrics so it's kind of like Verjnuarmu's self-classification of "Savo Metal" that's essentially Melodic Death Metal with Savo Finnish lyrics. So I don't think calling Rammstein broadly Industrial Metal would be too inaccurate.

Also, Rammstein and SOAD RULE!
