I've just been listening to a few national anthems, and a few of them I quite enjoyed. One of these was Israel's (Hatikva).

So, my question to you is this: What national anthems do you enjoy, or are emotionally attached to in some way? Do your connations have any?

I don't listen to national anthem's much, although I can say that I think US's is lame.

Most anthems are boring and sound much the same. I do like Hatikva just for standing out, though (and, probably, because I'm Israeli).

No probs. [;)]

I'm hoping to hear some more interesting anthems with the Olympics coming up.

Hatikva is very moving, I agree with testyal1.

In fact, there is a beautiful liturgical song in Spanish that is set to Hatikva. Lemme look it
up.

:per: national anthem "Somos libres, Peruanos" is way-overplayed in Peru, but I miss hearing it and enjoy singing it absens in remota.

I actually like the :usa: "Star Spangled Banner", though I prefer verse 4. I loved to sing the alto part when I was a youth.

Why has no country claimed "Liberty Bell" by J.P. Sousa? Now THAT's national anthem music if ever I heard it!

I really like the Polish anthem, but I'm biased since Poland is where I come from. I also like the Japanese one and the Hatikva.

The only one's I know of are America's anthem and Scotland's de facto anthem.
I'm not even sure if N. Ireland has its own or just shares the rest of the UK's!

As others said, the Israeli anthem is actually pretty good for a national anthem, since it, well, actually has some emotion. Almost all the other ones are boring military marches.

A couple others that somewhat stand out to me (that is, aren't boring military marches) would be the Japanese one (de facto, I think?) (it's composed in the traditional court style of Japanese music, which itself is based off medieval Chinese/Persian music, but nobody cares about that), as well as this one country in Africa I don't remember - Botswana, I think - because it was based off a traditional song or something.

Sheesh. Enough with all the damn military marches. I mean at least get some classy ones.

I totally agree. That's why I like both the Italian and the Japanese anthems. The German one is not bad, but it's also not good either.

WHAT?
HERESY!!!!
repent and re-educate yourself, tovarisch!

chileans think the chilean anthem is beautiful... you judge it. I find it ugly, militaristic, and screachy.

Also, I really like the Canadian one. It's mellow... nations should be mellow, they're too capable of oppression to afford to be non-mellow.

:dan: I like my country's anthem [:D]. The Royal Anthem too.
:zaf: This one has many languages, and is quite catchy.
:deu: I like this one as well.
:can: The canadian anthem is nice as well.

oh, yes, South Africa... o se boloke!
oooooose bo-lo-ke

correction, that anthem is best anthem... one that's about future, coexistence, diversity and peace, and not about unity, conformity and glorious blood shed for rich people's wallets.

My favorites are the Kazakh anthem, the Taijik anthem, the Nepalese anthem, the Russian anthem, the Bulgarian anthem, the Montenegrin anthem, and the Azerbaijani anthem. Not necessarily in that order.

The anthem of the Republic of Kalmykia is also nice.

Why do communist and post-communist states have the best anthems?
