Eh, ish? Some of the main characters are teenagers, but otherwise the trilogy doesn't feel like a YA book (link below).

Thé realism of the characters, I think. Their reactions to the dramatic events as well as their interpersonal relations feel realistic and engaging. Apart from that, the trilogy's got some of the most amazing imagery - I'm thinking especially of the chapter where the author describes the end of the world in great detail.

The other trilogy I love is the Orthogonal series. These are very hard science fiction following the inhabitants of a world very unlike our own as they discover the secrets of their universe right as it conspires to destroy them.

A couple of my favourite quotes:
‘Infinity is my least favourite temperature,’ Yalda confessed. ‘If you’re serious, I might have to recant.’

Yalda looked back towards the ruined edge of the forest. ‘When I get old,’ she said, ‘what will happen to me?’
‘Hush,’ Vito said. ‘That’s the way of men. No daughter of mine is going to die.’
