Þrinn: The Mid-Germanic Language
Re: Þrinn: The Mid-Germanic Language
I found this list of common diseases, but there are a lot of scientific diseases as well. I think you can pick and choose what kind of diseases you want to use from this list since all of them are fairly well known.

Re: Þrinn: The Mid-Germanic Language
This looks great!All4Ɇn wrote:Thanks for the list ixals :). Here's what I've got so far
I'm curious about the etymology of these terms:
Halágvítsdanz- Chorea
Midd- Leprosy
Rüsktiger- Anthrax (Literally Russian Tiger)
Re: Þrinn: The Mid-Germanic Language
Halágvítsdanz is literally Saint Vitus Dance which used to be the English name for the disease as well and dates back to the middle ages. As a word in Thrinn, Halágvítsdanz is still used in everyday language while Chorea is reserved for high level medical discussion and isn't really a Thrinn word even then.
Midd is an old verbal noun from the verb miðen which means to avoid which comes from the fact that people with leprosy were often outcasted or avoided. This etymology of the word is completely lost on Thrinn speakers though.
Rüsktiger's main origin comes from the fact that anthrax outbreaks (and thus the disease) were typically associated with Russia and Siberia in particular. As the tiger was an animal associated with Siberia, as well as one whose fur colour was similar to the red scars on anthrax victims' skin, the name rüsktiger began being used first as a euphemism and soon the name for the disease.
Thanks for the compliments also! I personally really like some of the names

Viþ Expressions
Thrinn has a fair number of prepositional expressions but not nearly as many or with as many different prepositions as German or English though. Probably the most common preposition in these cases is Viþ (Towards). Here's a few common expressions with it
Allergsk viþ.. vesen- To be allergic to
Aþ veg viþ- On the way to/On the way towards
Bi vege viþ... fraßen- To be in the process of
Gift viþ- Instead of
Miþat vaspuring viþ- On the heels of/In the pursuit of
Sig viþ... behäjen- To be worried about
Sig viþ... bergen- To protect oneself against
Stand viþ- Despite
Viþ... fraßen- Work on
Viþ... maðlen- Believe in

Sukiyaki (Ue O Muite Arukō)
I thought it seemed like a good time to translate a song into Thrinn and decided to go with Sukiyaki since it's not only one of my favorite songs but I've also translated it into several languages already.

Re: Þrinn: The Mid-Germanic Language
I assume this is the Taste of Honey adaptation? I'm sad to say I've only listened to Boogie Oogie Oogie, and quite by accident.
(Also, it might be good to label it as "Ue o Muite Arukō (Sukiyaki)", or something of the sort)

Re: Þrinn: The Mid-Germanic Language
It's a translation of Kyu Sakamoto's Japanese version. The English lyrics are also a translation of it. Quite a fan of the Taste of Honey version but the original's where it's atqwed117 wrote:I assume this is the Taste of Honey adaptation? Slahen- To Hit/Punch/Strike/Beat Pound
I've changed the conjugation of Slahen a bit. It's now an irregular verb instead of a strong one

Re: Þrinn: The Mid-Germanic Language
If you're still looking for lyrics, this tune's been going round my head a lot recently:
Batter my heart, three-person'd God; for you
As yet but knock; breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise, and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force, to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurp'd town, to another due,
Labour to admit you, but O, to no end.
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captived, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly I love you, and would be loved fain,
But am betroth'd unto your enemy:
Divorce me, untie, or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.
Or for something a little shorter but still with some interesting elements, here's something I heard at a concert recently:
Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep; but we shall all be changed in a moment, in a twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.
The trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
Then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: Death is swallowed up in victory.
Batter my heart, three-person'd God; for you
As yet but knock; breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise, and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force, to break, blow, burn, and make me new.

I've always loved this sonnet. I'll work on it but it'll definitely take a lot of time. I'd love to be able to figure out how to keep it in iambic pentameter too which would add even more time . The biggest pain of conlanging I suppose.

This one seems fairly easy. I'll probably have this one done soon after Lambuzhao's
