American English Derived Collablang!

Post by CarsonDaConlanger »

All communication between the United States and the other Anglophone nations has been cut off! Don't ask how or why, it just has. Over the centuries, American(US) English becomes a separate language. How will it develop? The choice is ours!

First, we need to choose the phonology. I will keep the wine-whine merger. This makes our starting consonant inventory as such:(orthography is standardized to add clarity when writing.
Nasal:/m n ŋ/ m n ng
Stop:/p b t d k g/ p b t d k g
Fricative:/f v θ ð s z ʃ ʒ h/f v th dh s z sh zh h
Lateral:/ł/ l
Affricate:/t͡ʃ d͡ʒ/
Approximant:/ɹ j w/r y w

So, question one: which mergers should we standardize?
A. Father-bother
B. Cot-Caught
C. Mary-marry-merry
D.Hurry-furry
E.Mirror-nearer
F.Any combination(state which ones) or something else I didn't list

All voting will last 24(ish) hours.

F. All of the above, I'm assuming a General American base with some influence from most major regional dialects with regards to large areal changes Let's call it "American Koine English"

A little nit-picky, but regarding the inventory in the original post, what about /t͡ʃ d͡ʒ/?

Round one of voting is done, F(all of the above) wins out.
The United States Federal Government decides to institute a program to standardize American English.
The vowel quality inventory is now as such for almost all speakers:
/ i ɩ ʊ u/
/eɩ oʊ/
/ɛ ǝ ʌ/
/æ ɑ/
/aɩ ɔɩ aʊ/

Now for round two: Consonant changes
It has been years since the standardization, and sounds are starting to change. What sound changes should we have?
General How these will pan out will be decided later
A. Palatalization before i/ɩ/ɛ/eɩ
B. Velarization before u/ʊ/oʊ/ʌ/ɑ
C. Intervocalic lenition
D. Final consonant devoicing
E. Intervocalic voicing
F.Lenition of lenis plosives unconditionally
G. De-aspiration of fortis plosives
H. All of the above
Specific Choose a few of these, or none, or add some. If none are chosen, I will pick one(or a few).
A. h>Ø/V_V
B. v>ʋ
C. w>ʋ
D. ɾ>ʔ
E. ɹ>r
F. ɾ>r
G. anything else

2. A, D (with vowel lengthening so that we have /bɛd/&/bɛt/ > /bɛ:t/&/bɛt), and E
3. A, E, F
Edit: Substituted a string instrument for a French interjection.

Voting for that is now done, and the results for 1 will be A,C,D,E and 2 will be A,B,C,F

With the velars?
A: k/g>c/ɟ
B: k/g>kʲ/gʲ
With nasals?
A:n,ŋ>nʲ
B:n,ŋ>ɲ
C:Distinguish between nʲ and ɲ?(does that even happen?)
Sibilants?
A:s,z>sʲ,zʲ|ʃ,ʒ>ʃ,ʒ
B:s,z,ʃ,ʒ>ʃ,ʒ
C:s,z>sʲ,zʲ|ʃ,ʒ>ɕ,ʑ
D:s,z>ʃ,ʒ|ʃ,ʒ>ɕ,ʑ
With /h/?
A:h>ç
B:h>h
With /ł/?
A: ł>l
B:ł>lʲ
C:ł>ʎ

1c: How will intervocalic lenition occur?
A: b,d,g>ʋ~ʋʲ, ð~ðʲ, ɣ~j Unvoiced do not leniate
B: p,t,k,b,d,g>f~fʲ, θ~θʲ, x~ç, ʋ~ʋʲ, ð~ðʲ, ɣ~j

1d: nothing to vote, bdg>ptk/_#, vowels lengthen to compensate.

1e: Will voicing effect only the fricatives, or plosives too?
A:fricatives only
