idea for new conlang

Post by adamcross1000 »

Hi! I've had this idea to have a simple language phonologically. I want to have 100 syllables in the language and I want each syllable to be a root. I want to take those roots and combine them to make longer and more complex words. What should the 100 roots be?

Look up “oligosynthetic” and follow some of the links you hit.

Also look up “Natural Semantic Metalanguage”. It might give you some ideas.

You might investigate Lojban. Obviously you wouldn’t want to imitate it! It’s not anything like what you want to achieve!
But it might give you some ideas for roots.

IIIRC, aUI is a Philoauxlang with a similar concept, just using individual phonemes instead of syllables, so look that up too.
Many children make up, or begin to make up, imaginary languages. I have been at it since I could write.

my advice:
do not look at other project until you first find your own path...
after you'll get pleasure to compare the different choices of other conlangs with yours...

Isd has a good point.

You might decide you need to look at other conlangs &/or auxlangs anyway. There might be good reasons you’d want to do that.
If you do, try to be careful.
Maybe only look at those that aren’t also trying to be oligosynthetic (i.e. don’t share exactly your specific design goals)?

In my not-necessarily-correct opinion, none of the resources recommended so far on this thread, pose a significant danger.
But make up your own mind.
