[lˠ] has the coronal portion of the tongue making the usual [l] shape, with the dorsal part of the tongue arched toward the velum (velarization on an alveolar lateral). [ʟ] has the dorsal part of the tongue against the velum with the sides dropped, with the coronal part taking no position (velar lateral).Omzinesý wrote:What's the diferesnce between ʟ and lˠ?

Can you actually do [p̪]? It always ends up as either [p̪f] or [f] for me.testyal1 wrote:Stops: /p p̪ t t̪ k/<p pt t tt k/

Do you think that would be a stable distinction over time?Micamo wrote:[lˠ] has the coronal portion of the tongue making the usual [l] shape, with the dorsal part of the tongue arched toward the velum (velarization on an alveolar lateral). Like I said, ready for plenty of collapses and mergers. Tho I might change y to ɯ, now that I look at it.Omzinesý wrote:I have never seen a phonology with so many l:s.clockworkbanana wrote: /p pˠ t tˠ tʷ k kʷ/

/i æ ø e a ɔ y ɶ o/
What's the differences between ʟ and lˠ?
Bilabial trill is always a nice sound. How does a velarized bilabial trill sound? Rather terrible?
There are 7 front vowels and 2(very close to each other) back vowels.) Harmonic?
But a nice try.

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
Something based on Arabic, because I'm watching coverage of the events there.
Consonants
/b t d dʒ k q ʔ/
/f θ s z ʃ (χ) ʁ h/
/m n/
/w l j r/
Short vowels
/i/ - ~ [ɪ]
/u/ - ~ [ʊ]
/a/ - [æ] ~ [ɑ] (may even tend to [ɛ])
/ə/ - [ə] ~ [ɜ]
Long vowels and diphthongs
/i:/ - [i:] ~ ~ [ej]
/u:/ - [u:] ~ ~ [ow]
/e:/ - [e:] - [e]
/o:/ - [o:] - [o]
/a:/ - [ɑ:] ~ [ɑ]
/aj/ - [æj]
/aw/ - [ɑw]
Long vowels are shortened word finally, and before two voiceless consonants. [ej] and [ow] allomorphs of /i:/ and /u:/ occur adjacent to uvulars. I haven't decided if I want /χ/ as a full phoneme, but I'm going to have /q/ go between [χ] and [q]. Roots have basically the following shape:
CV(C)CV(C), where V is any vowel/diphthong
There many be longer or shorter forms. Haven't thought about clusters yet. Just a small squib.

I was going to make an Arab-inspired conlang sometime in the far future, but anyhow... will this have the triconsonantal root system?

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
There are 4 phonemically distinct <L> sounds in Old Irish. Having one more isn't too much of a stretch.Omzinesý wrote:I have never seen a phonology with so many l:s.clockworkbanana wrote: /p pˠ t tˠ tʷ k kʷ/

A wee little thing
/b t dʒ k kʷ ʔ s h m n ɾ w/
/i a o/
CV(V) syllable structure. C is optional word initially. Legal vowel clusters are /ia io ai ao oa/. Some words generated with it (I actually quite like it):

haomia
onao
osia
aʔoa
sai
ino

The only voiced you mean? There's /b/ too. And pretty much just cuz I wanted to.

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
I like wee little phonologies, to be honest. Also because I don't have to make a crazy orthography for them.

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
And something yet again, because really, what else do I do, but spin webs of phonemes in my head:
/p t d c ɟ k q f s z ʃ x ɣ h m n r w j/
/i i: e e: a a: u u: aj aw/
CVC maximal syllables.

Oh man, that's fun! Thanks!
Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
O_O
Has a computer program taken away the very meaning of the creative act of making a phonology?
Just kidding, just kidding. It's a sweet thing there, it is! Although it doesn't list syllable structure or what not...

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
It's useful when in need of new ideas, but other than that major modifying is very often required.
