Need help identifying & translating this necklace

Post by Keenir »

A family friend asked me what it meant, and while I didn't know more than it looked like it might be Chinese or maybe Japanese (and that, given that it was on a necklace, that it probably meant good luck or protection from bad things), I knew that the good friends in CBB would know, so I copied it and scanned it:

The backing is a thin piece of pale green jade. The script and the enclosing circle are gold.

Can anyone read it?

My guess would be that it's a stylized version of the "longevity" character 夀 (shòu) (寿):

Of course, gold and jade have their own talismanic properties.
