Re: Guess the Word in Future Englishes
Was it two morphemes in Modern English?
Re: Guess the Word in Future Englishes
Yes, two single-morpheme words in ModE, still analysable as a compound word like blackbird or something in PZ.shimobaatar wrote:Was it two morphemes in Modern English?

Were the onsets of each morpheme /dʒ/ and /b/ in ModE?
[ˈaʃt̪əɹ ˈbalɨˌnɛsʲtʲəɹ]
Re: Guess the Word in Future Englishes
Yes to /b/, no to /dʒ/.Ashtâr Balînestyâr wrote:Were the onsets of each morpheme /dʒ/ and /b/ in ModE?

If not /d͡ʒ/, then /t͡ʃ/?Jackk wrote:Yes to /b/, no to /dʒ/.Ashtâr Balînestyâr wrote:Were the onsets of each morpheme /dʒ/ and /b/ in ModE?

Kind of a wild guess, but is the first morpheme "dream"?
Re: Guess the Word in Future Englishes
No. The nasal has assimilated to place in PZ; it was a different nasal in ModE.shimobaatar wrote:Kind of a wild guess, but is the first morpheme "dream"?

Re: Guess the Word in Future Englishes
To clarify, was this already a word/phrase in Modern English? Like, I know these two morphemes are valid words in Modern English, but is this combination of those words something we might say now in modern times? Hopefully this question makes sense.

Is the first morpheme from "drain"?

Eeh, yes...shimobaatar wrote:To clarify, was this already a word/phrase in Modern English? Like, I know these two morphemes are valid words in Modern English, but is this combination of those words something we might say now in modern times? Hopefully this question makes sense.
I mean, yes.
(Basically, the answer is yes, but with a tiny caveat: in the phrase in ModE,the first word is usually pluralised. I derived the PZ word from a version without the plural.)
No, but closer.Clio wrote:Is the first morpheme from "drain"?

Re: Guess the Word in Future Englishes
Nope, but the first phoneme of the second morpheme is indeed /b/.Click wrote:Rainbow?
"drain" wasn't quite that close . The nasal did come from /ŋ/, however.qwed117 wrote:Drainbow...Click wrote:Rainbow?

the second morpheme come from ModE 'bowl'? If not, is the vowel in British English some *əʊ or *ɔʊl?
