Loved, mourned and unforgotten

Post by xijlwya »

This is a challenge I got from my sister - she'd love to see a Latin translation of it. The original is German and I made a quick translation into English. If you can think of better alternatives, please feel free to post them!

:eng: Loved, mourned and unforgotten.

:deu: Ge-lieb-t, be-wein-t und un-vergess-en.
PCP-love.V-PCP, at-cry-PCP and non-forget-PCP
/gəˈliːbt bəˈvaint ʊnd ˈʊnfɐˌgɛsən/ (Please correct me if I'm wrong here, I suck at IPA vowels)
Loved, cried at and unforgotten.

:con: Mága
sia pialásh shaz sia sámtia shaz rik khátsu nai onue kakáru shaz
/sia piaˈlaʃ ʃaz sia ˈsamtia ʃaz ɾik ˈχatsu nai onuə kaˈkaɾu ʃaz/
V love ADJ V cry ADJ PREP group and COP.N forget ADJ
Edit: See Creyeditor's post.

Is it plural or singular?

:fra:

Aimé, pleuré, inoublié
loved, cried (also mourned), unforgotten
[ɛ.'me | plœ.'ʁe ‖ 'i.nu.bli.e]

Inoublié isn't a word we'd use often in French, though...
(Learned to use prosody in IPA :3)

Since all three languages I posted in the OP do not make this distinction in their participles, you're are essentially free to decide. You may, even better, post both variants.
Visinoid wrote: :fra: pleuré - :eng: cried
Could you provide the "cried at" or "cried for" meaning? It's the "beweint" in the German version, which seems to be most problematic to me, because of the prefix be- meaning something like "at"

Good thing! I'm also still learning all those crazy special signs :D

In French, pleurer means both to cry and to mourn.

On l'a beaucoup pleuré. (It doesn't mean the people literally cried.)

Edit: another example :3

La plupart des gens ont beaucoup pleuré Michael Jackson lorsqu'il est mort.
Most people cried over the fact that Michael Jackson was gone when he died.

(Translation could be debatable.)

Well, here's a Latin translation:

:lat:

Amata, lucta, inobliterata
love<PFTPASS.PTCP>F.NOM.SG mourn<PFT.PASS.PTCP>F.NOM.SG <NEG>forget<PFT.PASS.PTCP>F.NOM.SG

One might also say

Amata , lucta, inoblita

where the last word, though also a PFT.PASS.PTCP has a more POT meaning like 'unforgettable'

{reviews Latin funerary inscriptions quickly and dirtily…}

A third option may be

Dilecta, lucta, inoblita

dilectus Originally 'chosen' (from diligere/deligere 'to choose' ) but also came to mean 'beloved'
