No / None / Neither / Not a single - Absence.

Post by Maraxxus »

I have been trying to find ways to denote the absence of certain objects, but I'm more interested in how your own conlangs deal with this.
There are no flowers in this garden. (Indicating that there are no flowers in the garden)
None of the flowers are in this garden. (Indicating that not one of a specified amount of flowers are in the garden)
Neither of the flowers are in this garden. (Indicating that not one of the two specified flowers are in the garden)
There isn't a single flower in this garden. (Emphasizing the indication that there are no flowers in the garden)

German uses different negative existantials. There is no seperate negation for the dual, like there is in english. In fact, number is a mess in these examples, especially if you compare the verbal marking with the semantic subject. I hope noone will kill me for posting a natlang, when conlangs are wanted [;)]

4. kono niwa ni hana ka mo arimasen.

Japanese deals with statements like these very easily due to particle-verb negation.
But again, I'm not completely fluent in Japanese, so I might be wrong here.
The glosses are literally word for word how it would be read in English.

I'm struggling with this for Swahili because the only way to negate is with finite verbs. The first and the fourth sentences are straightforward.

:tan: Swahili:

Hakuna maua katika bustani hii.
ha-ku-na maua katika bustani hii
NEG-17-COM flowers(6) LOC garden(9) DEM.PROX.9

There are no flowers in this garden.

Hakuna ua lolote katika bustani hii.
ha-ku-na ua lo-l-ote katika bustani hii
NEG-17-COM flower(5) REL.5-5-all LOC garden(9) DEM.PROX.9

There isn't a single flower in this garden.

With the other sentences, I'm having a hard time. These are the best I've come up with ... with mawili "two" appearing wherever "neither" is needed.

Hakuna lolote miongoni mwa maua (mawili) lililopo katika bustani hii.
ha-ku-na ua lo-l-ote miongo-ni mw-a maua (ma-wili) li-li-lo-po katika bustani hii
NEG-17-COM REL.5-5-all midst-LOC 18-GEN flowers(6) (6-two) 6-REL.COP-6.REL-LOC.16 LOC garden(9) DEM.PROX.9

There isn't one among the (two) flowers which is in this garden.

Maua (mawili) hayo hayapo katika bustani hii.
maua (ma-wili) hayo ha-ya-po katika bustani hii
flowers(6) (6-two) DEM.REF.6 NEG-6-LOC.16 LOC garden(9) DEM.PROX.9

The (two) flowers are not in this garden.

Hopefully one of those conveys the correct sense of specific flowers being absent from the garden.
Glossing Abbreviations: COMP = comparative, C = complementiser, ACS / ICS = accessible / inaccessible, GDV = gerundive, SPEC / NSPC = specific / non-specific, AG = agent, E = entity (person, animal, thing)

The verb lis is a copula for location, and I'm glossing it here as 'exist'. It can be either negated like any other verb, or replaced by ucer 'be absent, missing':

1.
maz lis śezru ji ndusar vara.
not exist.IPF flower on field-INAN.OBL this-INAN.OBL

OR:
ucer śezru ji ndusar vara.
be.absent.IPF flower on field-INAN.OBL this-INAN.OBL

There are no flowers in this field.

Here both sentences mean the same, but the second one implies that there were supposed to be flowers.

2.
maz lis malse śezrur ji ndusar vara.
not exist.IPF nothing flower-INAN.OBL on field-INAN.OBL this-INAN.OBL
None of the flowers are in this field.

Double negation, yay [:P]

3.
This one is hard - the language doesn't have a definite article or a word for "neither", and a literal translation feels wrong:

maz lis malse śezrur paź ji ndusar vara.
not exist.IPF flower-INAN.OBL two on field-INAN.OBL this-INAN.OBL
Neither of the flowers are in this field (lit. none of the two flowers are in this field)

A better way:

śezru nei eeźi ebe paźui ucer ji ndusar vara.
flower one-INAN that-INAN also two-ORD-INAN be.absent.IPF on field-INAN.OBL this-INAN.OBL
Neither of the flowers are in this field (lit. that flower and also the second one are not in this field).

4.
ebe śezru nei maz lis ji ndusar vara
also flower one-INAN not exist.IPF on field-INAN.OBL this-INAN.OBL
There isn't even one flower in this field.

I don't think these sound quite right. 沒有 isn't usually used to negate 在 in this sense. I've only heard '沒在' in response to a question like 'has XXX arrived yet?', and even that might be dialectal.

'None of the flowers are in the garden' is a funny construction in Chinese. I think most naturally 'flowers' would be topicalised, so you'd get something like:
(那些)花沒有一朵在花園裏
or
那些花都不在花園裏

'No flowers are in the garden' might be:
花園裏一朵花也沒有

There isn't a single flower in this garden.

*Gotski indicates "There is..." with "Had..." which is literally "(It) has..."
**the pronouns nesuh and nehozeruh are not declinable.
***for (4), since Gotski doesn't have any articles, simple putting "one" before the nouns suffices to specify a single flower from "a flower"
