Cat dialogue (part 1)

Post by Xing »

:eng:

Two black cats were discussing their tails:

"My tail is longer than yours", said one of them to the other.
"I don't believe you", said the other cat.
"Let's compare."
"No, I don't trust you. You always cheat."

(And since I'm fairly certain they're not standard glossing abbreviations by any means, NFUT is near future tense (which I went for because I assume the proposed tail-comparing was to be immediate) and AB is for my abstract noun class.)

Notes for supernerds who care <3:
Roman numerals in glosses are genders in accordance with the standard Bantu numbering system (in Roman numerals so they don't look like grammatical persons). Animate nouns take agreement for classes 1/2 no matter what class they belong to (with the exception of genitives for class 9/10), hence the lack of agreement with the class 9/10 noun for "cat".

I've glossed kind of deeply, showing underlying forms that are not always actually realised and probably not conceptualised as such in anyone's head, such as the "ny-" prefix in class 9/10 that's deleted before most consonants ... the fact that there are, as of reasonably recently, loanwords accepted into that class that should have a nasal prefix but don't (which previously went into class 5/6, which generally lacks a prefix in singular for polysyllabic stems) means that it's probably dropped away as any kind of underlying prefix.

I just remembered that the ny- prefix left a remnant where it disappeared in front of a lot of consonants and causes them to be aspirated, which causes some minimal pairs between unaspirated words of the 5/6 class and aspirated words of the 9/10 class. In theory, paka without aspiration would be an augmentative form of paka with aspiration ... but this whole business of aspiration is basically confined to native speakers of Swahili, which make up only around 10% of total speakers, and I think even there it's fading, with aspiration gravitating towards word-initial syllables and stressed syllables.

I'm not sure if kuhusu is needed in the first line, if it can simply be omitted or replaced with the applicative wanazungumzia. For the rest, I'm reasonably confident.

Would it be possible to provide IPA for the Swahili?

Yeah, I'll try. Reasonably confident ...
