"more"

Post by Imralu »

To avoid relexing, I think it's a good idea to really pull apart the various ways that a single word can be used in English (or in any of the languages that we know) and think about how they might be in your conlang - or to look at how they are translated into a natlang you are learning to see the difference.

Comparative adverb:
  • With adjectives:
    • (1) This is more interesting than that.
    With verbs:
    • (2) I love you more than he does.
    With nouns:
    • (3) He's more of a friend than you.
Comparative determiner:
  • Comparative uncountable quantity (comparative of "much"):
    • (4) There is more water here than there.
Comparative countable quantity (comparative of "many"):
    • (5) There are more people here than there.
Determiner meaning "Additional" (Not comparative unless you want to think of it as comparing future with past.)
  • Determiner: Additional uncountable:
    • (6) I would like some more water.

      (7) I don't want any more water.

(8a) Please, sir. May I have some more? (Eg. gruel)

      (8b) More!!?
  • Additional countable, singular:
    • (9) We need one more knife.
    Additional countable, plural:
    • (10) The king demands more slaves.
    Additional non-specific, abstract:
    • (11) Tell me more.
Adverb meaning "further", "on". (Often replaced with other words in English, kind of archaic in most contexts.)
  • Positive:
    • (12) Walk on! / Walk further! / Walk on! / Continue walking!
    Negative:
    • (13) I don't love you anymore.
Glossing Abbreviations: COMP = comparative, C = complementiser, ACS / ICS = accessible / inaccessible, GDV = gerundive, SPEC / NSPC = specific / non-specific, AG = agent, E = entity (person, animal, thing)

Ngolu:

Comparative:
The comparative is marked by hue to indicate a positive comparison and nia to indicate a negative comparison. There is no word for "than" - hue and nia are simply used correlatively if need be. On their own, hue and nia refer to degree but their derivative forms with -ra and -ru, indicating uncountable and countable quantities respectively, are used as quantifiers.

(1)

COMP interesting NOM.3s.INAN.DEF-PROX | (ADV) NEG.COMP NOM.3s.INAN.DEF-DIST

COMP sexually.loved NOM.2s.ACS DAT.2s.ACS | (ADV) NEG.COMP DAT.3s.ICS.DEF

(3)

hue ali ja | (lo) nia ua
COMP friend NOM.3s.ACS.DEF | (ADV) NEG.COMP NOM.2s.ACS
He's more of a friend than you.

(4)

COMP-much water LOC.3s.INAN.DEF-PROX | (ADV) NEG.COMP-much LOC.3s.INAN.DEF-DIST

(Literally: There is more water here, there is less there.)

(5)

COMP-many person LOC.3s.INAN.DEF-PROX | (ADV) NEG.COMP-many LOC.3s.INAN.DEF-DIST
There are more people here than there.
(Literally: This are more people here, there are fewer there.)

Additional:
The Ngolu word oto comes from o meaning "entity" or "exist" and the word to which has many uses. I generally gloss to as 'thus'. It marks the end of a fronted topic, the apodosis of a conditional sentence (generally a realis sentence as there is a separate irrelis form toi), it often simply indicates the main clause after a subordinate clause, may be used to mean "then", "subsequently" (also teuo) and also sometimes "so", "therefore", "consequently" (also toua). The compound oto thus essentially means "subsequent entity/entities". It generally acts as a head, being modified by the subsequent thing.

(6)
Ezuos oto hunia nua.
ezuo o-to hun‹i›a nua
VOC.C entity-thus drink‹GDV› LOC.1s.ICS
I would like some more water.
(Literally: Oh that there be additional water at me.)

The word munu is the general word for water, as seen in (4). In contexts where the drinkability of the water is relevant, the word used is hunia, essentially meaning 'potable'.

(7)
Kka bos eni as oto hunia.
kka bo eni a o-to hun‹i›a
no wanted DAT.1s.ICS NOM.3s.INAN.NSPC entity-thus drink‹GDV›
I don't want any more water.
(Literally: Additional water is not wanted to me.)

(8a)

eju otu i-kua o-to ana
VOC.3s.ICS.DEF powerful PRED-JUSS entity-thus LOC.1s.ACS
Please sir, may I have some more?
(Literally: Oh the powerful one, may there be additional at me.)

(8b)
Ha hos oto!?
ha ho o-to
Q QUOT entity-thus

(Literally: Is it, quote, "more"?)

(9)
Xume ieuas enes as otos (ahu) akuela.
xume ieua ene a o-to (ahu) akuela
necessary DAT.2p.ACS DAT.1s.ACS NOM.3s.INAN.NSPC entity-thus (one) eating.knife

(Literally: An additional (one) eating knife is necessary to y'all and to me.)

(10)
Kaba ju taqu ies oto tuva.
kaba ju taqu ie o-to tuva
demand NOM.3s.ICS.DEF king ACC.3p.INAN.NSPC entity-thus slave
The king demands more slaves.
(Literally: The king demands additional slaves.)

(11)
E zoi (uas) ene ias oto.
e zoi (ua) ene ia o-to
IMP say (NOM.2s.ACC) DAT.1s.ACS NOM.3p.INAN.NSPC entity-thus
Tell me more.
(Literally: Tell me additional things.)

(11)
E zoi oto (uas) ene.
e zoi o-to (ua) ene
IMP say entity-thus (NOM.2s.ACS) DAT.1s.ACS
Tell me more.
(Literally: Additional-tell me.)

In the second example for (11), oto is used as a modifier within the predicate rather than a separate argument.

Further:
The words toio and nto are derived from to and are equivalent to one another. They are generally used as a head but may also be used as a modifier when there is no syntactic ambiguity. Phrases like kka nto [no continue] may be used in the negative but it is more common to speak directly of the cessation of the act with bi.

(12)
E nto tuiu (ua).

IMP COP-thus foot-do (NOM.2s.ACS)

(12)

(Literally: Walk continuingly.)

This is a really, really good translation challenge. Avoiding relexes and introducing quirks and hiccoughs in a conlang's grammar is important, and this is the sort of challenge that lets us think more deeply about all that.

Having said that, Savvinic is basically just a relex of South Italian with cases [:P]

Comparative adverb:

(1) Ècc ès mai afflukan paj'ou.
[ˈɛkk ɛs ˈmaj ˈafːlʊkə̃m pəˈjɔʊ]
PROX be.PRES.3SG more capture-PRES.PRTC than DIST

I love you more than he does.

(3) Ès mai put ai bbari pai teun.

be.3SG more like INDEF.M.NOM friend than 2SG.NOM
He's more of a friend than you. (lit. he/she is more like a friend than you)

Comparative determiner:

Determiner meaning "Additional":

(7) Nei éṡggiu mai apas.

This solution is unsatisfying: nös (there) is an adverb and shouldn't be able to take case endings. In fact, there is no method of comparison other than the equative; this challenge has really touched a sore spot of Caelian.

In French, the situation is a bit complicated. The plural is only used for more than one object, so "zero boys" is translated with the singular, but since most French nouns only mark the plural in writing, this isn't always obvious in speech. An example that can be heard in speech is deux chevaux / zéro cheval (/dø‿ʃ.vo | ze.ʁo‿ʃ.val/ - two horse.PL / zero horse.SG - two horses / zero horses).

For the glosses below, I wrote purely written distinctions between {curly brackets}.

:fra: French
