shimobaatar wrote: 06 Aug 2018 06:02 It came down to a choice between this word and another one, but I figured that this one might be a little less obvious. I'll probably use the other word I was considering the next time it's my turn.

Language: Modern Königsberg Northeast Germanic
Word: wjytsfilps
IPA: /ˈʋʲytsfilps/

Did the /ʲy/ come from some breaking, and if so, of pG *ō
Spoiler:
I should probably just get to it is it from *wōþijaz + *feluwurdijaz meaning roughly "to flatter"

It did not, and neither of those words are involved.

Another hint: the first word in the compound was vowel-initial in Proto-Germanic.

Another hint, although this was probably obvious: Both words in the compound are nouns, and were nouns in Proto-Germanic.

I'm afraid this is going to come off as passive-aggressive or something like that, but I'm going to ask anyway, because I'm genuinely curious, and it feels weird to just keep throwing hints out into the void: Is anyone else still interested in playing this game?

In the first root of the word, was the vowel *u or *ū? And was this later umlauted?

Did the second root of the word have the shape fVlp- in PG?

The root of the first word was uCC- in Proto-Germanic.

This looks like the same question you asked in your last post, unless I'm misreading something? Did you mean to ask something different?
