How old are you?

Post by Imralu »

How old are you?
I'm ______ (number) years old.

Feel free to use your real age, the age of a character or simply make up an age.

:con: :png: Wena:

Wa i lu mawe nyoda?
2s COP LOC.E how_many year
How old are you?
(Literally "How many years are you / have you been in?")

Na i lu wege ame wembe nyoda.
1s COP LOC.E three ten.and five year
I am thirty-three years old.
(Literally "I am / have been in 35 years." Age is counted the same way as in Korea. When you're born, you're in your first year and if the next day is New Year's day, you're already in your second year on your second day.)

Your full question would be:

Öçek la che sömöthsev chöstafíthev hömal?
2SG-NOM AUX.PRES DEF year-LOC how.manieth-LOC be.at.INTERR
At which how-manieth year are you?

But with context, you could truncate that to:

Öçek la che chöstafíthsev hömal?
2SG-NOM AUX.PRES DEF how.manieth.one-LOC be.at.INTERR
At which how-manieth.one are you?

To which the full-blown answer might be:

Sí la che sömöthsev sebutmnöfíthev mal.
1SG-NOM AUX.PRES DEF year-LOC fortieth-LOC be.at
I'm at the fortieth year.

or more simply:

Sí la che sebutmnöfíthsev mal.
1SG-NOM AUX.PRES DEF fortieth.one-LOC be.at
I'm at the fortieth.

:esp: Spanish

Informal:
¿Cuántos años tienes?
[ˈkwantos ˈaɲos ˈtjenes]
cuánt-o-s año-s tien-es
how.many-M-PL year-PL have-2SG.FAM.PRS.IND

How old are you? (lit. "How many years do you have?")

Formal:
¿Cuántos años tiene (usted)?
[ˈkwantos ˈaɲos ˈtjene (usˈteð̞)]
cuánt-o-s año-s tien-e (usted)
how.many-M-PL year-PL have-3SG.PRS.IND (2SG.FORM)

How old are you?

The "usted" can be included for clarification, since out of context, "¿Cuántos años tiene?" can also be interpreted as "How old is he/she/it?". This is not necessary for the first sentence, which is unambiguous, but the informal second-person singular pronoun "tú" could still be added for emphasis.

Tengo treinta años.
[ˈteŋgo ˈtɾejnta ˈaɲos]
teng-o treinta año-s
have-1SG.PRS.IND thirty year-PL

I'm thirty years old.

:chn: Mandarin

There are a couple of different ways to ask this. The most common is:

你几岁(了)? (simplified)
你幾歲(了)? (traditional)
Nǐ jǐ suì (le)?
[ni˧˥ t͡ɕi˨˩ sweɪ̯˥˩ (lɤ̆˩)]
2.FAM[SG] how.many years.old (COS)
How old are you?

The sentence-final particle 了 indicates a change of state; I wasn't sure how to gloss it, so I glossed it as "COS". In this case, it's optional, but including it makes it a bit more polite. Technically, 岁/歲 suì just means "year(s)", not "years old", but in modern usage, it's practically never used except when talking about age (the more common word for "year" is 年 nián [njɛn˧˥]).

Another way to ask it is:

你多大(了)? (same in simp. and trad.)
Nǐ duō dà (le)?
[ni˨˩ twɔ˥ ta˥˩ (lɤ̆˩)]
2.FAM[SG] how big (COS)
How old are you? (lit. "How big are you?")

The words 小 xiǎo "small" and 大 dà "big" are commonly used to mean "young" and "old", respectively. Also note that 多 duō, as an interrogative adverb, means "how" specifically in the sense of "to what extent" (as in "how big").

Both of the above questions can be made more formal by replacing the informal pronoun 你 nǐ with its formal equivalent, 您 nín [nin˧˥]. There are other, more formal ways of phrasing the question, but the above two are by far the most common (to my knowledge, at least).

And the answer would be:

我三十岁(了)。 (simp.)
我三十歲(了)。 (trad.)
Wǒ sānshí suì (le).
[wɔ˨˩ san˥ʂʐ̩˧˥ sweɪ̯˥˩ (lɤ̆˩)]
1[SG] three-ten years.old (COS)
I'm thirty years old.

Una umri gani?

Una miaka mingapi?

How old are you? (Literally: "How many years do you have?")

Nina miaka thelathini na mitatu.
ni-na miaka thelathini na mi-tatu
1s-with years(CL4) thirty with CL4-three.

I am thirty-three years old.

I'm not completely sure if the final digit of a long number inflects for noun class or not but I think I saw somewhere that it does. It's hard to find examples where the number is actually written out and even harder where it reflects a noun class that would demand inflection.
