Was the consonant deleted in <maic> an obstruent in Latin?

Is it from Latin macellus?

If so, does it mean to sell on the black market?

So it is not from macellus, I suppose.

Hmm

Could it possibly be from metellus with a hypothetical intermediate *metiello? And if so, does it mean enslave?

[cross] [cross] , don't forget that there was a deleted consonant in <maic>, so neither macellus nor metellus fit. [;)]

That's a hard one. Depending on the view of the speaker, the process of exorcising is either similar to what that word describes or it's really far off.

I'd think that would be nearly impossible, wouldn't it?

I disagree, but feel free to create something like this for a priori languages if you want to; I don't want to derail this thread by arguing about something off-topic that ultimately comes down to subjective tastes.

I believe it would be Reverse CBB Lexicon building, but the person already has a meaning in mind.

Sure. Again, I'm not going to stop anyone who wants to start a thread like that, nor could I.

Anyway, "esmaicelisaçõi" is essentially "little ex-evil-ization", and it could either mean something similar to "exorcism" or something completely different, depending on who you're talking to? I… have a guess, but… I don't want to say it because it'll seem pretty weird if I'm wrong. Is this a term for something you wouldn't typically discuss in polite company?

The -maicel- part aka the "little evil" isn't actually correct as there was a semantic shift (inspired by other closely related Romance natlangs) but I think knowing it isn't important to guess the meaning. I just wanted to note it. In the end, it's a [tick] !

So, "malice", just to be sure?

Well, if it isn't similar to exorcism in the mind of a priest, I don't think I was on the right track. [:$]

Oh ok [:'(]

It's still something I wouldn't discuss with people I don't know well (or even with people I know). Some people see it as "getting rid of something evil", while a lot of people don't think. As a hint: I'd say it doesn't happen that often and esmaicelisaçõi is also just a euphemism for it. There's another way more common and well-known term for it.
