Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
"to express an opinion"?
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Toooo generic - the definition of broðiar in the idiom is one of the definitions I gave of brouiller.

Hmm… then, might I ask what "to put (someone) off (something) jam" means? I don't believe I've heard that expression before.

Oh! those are two different definitionsshimobaatar wrote: ↑10 Nov 2018 21:35 Hmm… then, might I ask what "to put (someone) off (something) jam" means? I don't believe I've heard that expression before.
I put him off strawberries for life
The printer jammed
However, neither of those two is the relevant definition.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Ah, OK. I thought that the "jam" part felt out of place.
As in "I did something that made him stop liking strawberries"? I know you said it isn't relevant, but I don't think I'd use this kind of construction, so I just want to make sure I know what it means.
Darn!
So, I think it was established that it doesn't mean "to confuse" as in "to cause confusion", but has anyone asked if it means "to confuse" as in "to get two or more things mixed up, to misunderstand" yet?
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Yes, exactly.shimobaatar wrote: ↑10 Nov 2018 21:53 As in "I did something that made him stop liking strawberries"?

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
OK, so, taking that as a "no", the definitions you gave for brouiller were:
"to blur"
"to mix up"
"to confuse"
"to scramble (an egg)"
"to set at odds"
"to put (someone) off (something)"
"to jam"
Is it "to blur"? I don't think it has to do with food.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Sorry, that was me being annoyingly elliptic: my intent was to communicate "Nobody has asked whether broðiar here means to confuse (sth for another thing), but if they did, I would answer yes."
So yes, broðiar here means "to confuse something for something else".

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Ohh, sorry! I totally misunderstood.
Is there more to it, or is "l'entrig" just equivalent to "something" here? I think you said something along those lines earlier, but I want to double check.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
there's a specific English idiom "to confuse the X" that I had in mind - it may or may not help to know that entrig is cognate to English intrigue.shimobaatar wrote: ↑10 Nov 2018 22:32 Ohh, sorry! I totally misunderstood.

An equivalent idiom in English might be translated literally as:
rendr moudous l'aug.

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Uh… given that, and looking at your earlier hint, is it "to confuse the issue"? I'm almost certain I've heard that, although it's not in my personal "repertoire" of phrases, so to speak.
Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs
Correct!shimobaatar wrote: ↑11 Nov 2018 05:08 Uh… given that, and looking at your earlier hint, is it "to confuse the issue"? I'm almost certain I've heard that, although it's not in my personal "repertoire" of phrases, so to speak.
The central meaning of broðiar is "to blur, to make foggy" and thus "to confuse sth from sth else".
The central meaning of entrig is "plot, storyline". It comes from a deverbal of entrighar "to get involved" which descends from Latin intricāre "to entangle".
Well done!
