Was it borrowed directly from Classical Latin (as opposed to being directly inherited), or was it not originally a Latin word at all?

Neither; it ultimately comes from a Latin word but it was borrowed from a language other than Latin.

Was it borrowed from one of the "main" Romance languages (Spanish, Portugueses, French, Italian, Romanian)?

(Haha, just realized I wrote "Portugueses" in my last post. Apparently my computer doesn't register that as a spelling error.)
