Yes, *p.
Also I'll just repeat the word here: [hɪ˥̃.ɸœf].

Re: Guess the Word in Future Englishes
Does it mean "hopeful" or "hopefully"?
Edit: Okay, that doesn't explain nasalization so it's definitely not.

No, it doesn't, but it is also a very positive word just like hope.

Just to check, is it one morpheme?
And does the first 'h' correspond to ME *h

Re: Guess the Word in Future Englishes
It is definitely one morpheme in FE and it was more than one morpheme before ME. Don't really know if it is analyzable in ME, though. If we use the pre-ME morpheme analysis it yields [hɪ˥̃]-[ɸœf]-0. The last morpheme was lost on the way to FE.qwed117 wrote:Just to check, is it one morpheme?

Does the first 'h' correspond to ME 'g'? ME 's'?

Re: Guess the Word in Future Englishes
I keep reading "ME" as "Middle English".
Anyway, does the tone on the first syllable of [hɪ̃˥ɸœf] come from just the loss of the coda nasal?

No, it was the stressed syllable in MoE. Is that a better abbreveation?shimobaatar wrote:I keep reading "ME" as "Middle English".
