So does 'j' come from a devoiced affricate ('ch')?

Yes. In Pēsh Zūcn it is an agent derivational morpheme, like -er in Modern English.Ashtâr Balînestyâr wrote:Is the third morpheme from guy?

So right now we know the word is some

Re: Guess the Word in Future Englishes
Does 'j' come from *ʃ <sh>? If so, does 'ū' come from *əʊ̯ <ow>?
If so, is it *art-showing guy, and does it mean 'curator of a gallery'?

No, neither of these is true.qwed117 wrote:Does 'j' come from *ʃ <sh>? If so, does 'ū' come from *əʊ̯ <ow>?
As a reminder,
Ōjūvngà
/ɔːˈt͡ʃuː.ʋn̩ˌkɑ/
[ɔˈd͡ʒuː.ʋɪŋˌgɑ]
The sound d͡ʒ in the word has always been phonetically voiced, i.e. the sound in ME was voiced and it has retained its voicing by being between vowels, while the language lost its phonemic voicing distinction.
Nope! I quote:Creyeditor wrote:Art loving guy, i.e. so an art lover?

Re: Guess the Word in Future Englishes
Well, does it have anything to do with art?
Edit: I wanted to clarify that I know the first morpheme comes from "art", but I'm asking if the profession is still related to what we think of as art.

Yes, very much so.shimobaatar wrote:Well, does it have anything to do with art?

In fact, the morpheme ō- is almost redundant in the word ōjūvngà; i.e. the hypothetical word chūvngà would probably be fine, but eh, language is weird.
(It's rather like ME icicle <- ice-ickle)
No, mostly. Modern English "long u" as in "too" or "choose" fronted to /y:/ and then unrounded to /i:/, in most cases.qwed117 wrote:Does *ū come from ME /u/?
One prominent exception is that /u:/ was preserved before coda /l/, which was lost.
So:
"few" /fju:/ -> /fi:/ fī
"fool" /fu:l/ -> /fu:/ fū
There is another word fū in Pēsh Zūcn. Its source has the same vowel in Modern British English as ōjūvnga, and indeed, another word with ū that I've used a few times already.

Bingo!Creyeditor wrote:Does it just mean artist?
More specifically, I'd probably say "painter" - the root is " art drawing guy", but close enough!
Well done!
