Dear Friend,

I have never shown this journal to anyone. After my passing, all are welcome to read it. Kindly give this book to the library. Please instruct him to put this diary among the Library’s special collection of my short stories, poems, letters and books.

My love to everyone.

Interesting question that. Not the person addressed in the missive. I just went with on/man/men/one (a monk/a library worker) until/unless we're further advised.

That's the fun of the translation; it's up to your interpretation and imagination. Perfect for those languages with honorifics ;)

In essence though, the original source had proper nouns for the library and the librarian's name, but I removed them and replaced it with "him". (+10 points to Lao Kau for guessing that it's the library worker correctly!)

Ah, it's meant to be Ø but I can only type that easily on my phone. Weird though, because I did type this on my phone, so not sure why I did that.

Anyway, the little final -a on Bantu verbs in Swahili doesn't indicate anything except it's not subjunctive and it's not present-tense-negative. It's sometimes glossed INDIC, sometimes FV (final vowel) and I've even seen it glossed with a question mark. The other option is to regard it as part of the stem and cover it's replacement by suffixes under morphophonology, but I think it's best to just gloss it as Ø. I'm still figuring out how to do things with a German windows keyboard, so I semi-logically replace it with Ö when I can't be bothered copying and pasting Ø from elsewhere. I really miss using the US-International keyboard.

Stāith ā hleosē meinho lobu13.

Notes:

1: it would not strictly speaking be inaccurate to say diaria frīnd, as an English speaker might be tempted – this could indeed be interpreted, in an appropriate context, as ‘precious friend’; however, it would more naturally be read as “expensive prostitute”, which is probably not what was intended here.

2: Old Wenthish did already have perfect constructions of the typical later European “have” style. However, they were not yet grammaticalised, and mostly associated with the direct results of punctual, transitive actions. Here, instead, a more general construction is used: a plain past continuous construction with the negative past copula, and the verbal noun – translated word for word into English, this would be “I wasn’t on showing this”. This construction is of course the basis for the so-called “aorist” of modern Wenthish.

3: probably not a common word, but the concept may have existed, at least for monks; this is obviously a borrowing from Latin.

4: the verb liesena indicates departure from a region without the intent of returning; as well as death, it is also used for exile and for departing home to enter a monastery. The expression “under heaven” makes clear that death is implied here.

5: literally, “it stands on face (of each man)”; the influence of Irish is evident here. The expression ā hleosē most often means “for”, in the sense of a benefactor (ec smailddo hit ā hleosē thēinna, “I melted it for you”); however, modifying the locative verb here, it is better read as “it is open for”, “it is possible/permissable for” or “it is available for”.

6: assuming a text written in the Latin script, as would be expected of a book. If it were a text written in runes, the verb would instead be frarēdena, otherwise meaning ‘read from’ or ‘interpret’.

7: literally “inasmuch as you are tender”

8: libraries in the independent sense did not really exist in this period. However, this word, “book hall”, would be used of a room in a monastery in which texts were stored.

9: the syntax here is tortured. This sentence is ordered, translating naively: “tell a man to put this diary among of my poems the collection of my short stories, letters and books, special of the book hall”. The use of case allows much freer word order than in modern English: ‘my poems’ has been fronted both to stress “my” (rather than the more impersonal “the collection”) and to break up the following list, but its genitive case prevents misunderstanding. Similarly, the remaining list has been placed next to “collection” to stress the semantic connexion, even though this separates the noun “collection” from its adjective “special” – the fact that both noun and adjective are in the accusative prevents ambiguity, and indeed the fact that this results in “special”, modifying “collection”, being placed next to the collection’s possessor, the book hall, is beneficial to the sense. The possibilities that the collection belongs to the poems, or that the collection contains the library, can be dismissed from context.

10: the possessive is not repeated here, but is clearly implied by the grammar – the adjective is both in the definite declension and preceding the noun, and as no article is present it can be assumed that the noun is also modified by a possessive. The adjective, incidentally, indicates not strictly “short” (the would be either scorta, which would imply ‘defective’, or geir, which is only appropriate for describing the height of people and animals), but “concise”.

11: “written messages”

12: it is clear that this adjective must describe “collection”, because it is in the definite singular masculine accusative.

13: the phrase stāith ā hleosē appears again; with the plain noun rather than the infinitive, the sense is closer to “is offered to”, “is made available to”.

I certainly enjoyed this one because I hadn't developed how to start a letter and a lot of the vocab in this. It also showcases the orthography well.

A couple notes: I translated "kindly" as mid vrúndlihaad "with friendliness." Vrúndlihaad is fun (for me) because it contrasts with vrúenn "friend" in two ways. First, since it's word internal, the <nd> remains in vrúndlihaad where it's been changed to <nn> in vrúenn. Also, vrúndlihaad exhibits trisyllabic laxing which shortens the vowel from /yː/ to /ʏ/.

The very last sentences showcases several different plural forms:
Final -e: schorttal > schorttalle
Null Ending: lúed > lúed
Final -en: writ > written
Umlaut: bóek > byk
Spoiler:
N = Neuter
PN = Pronoun Adjacent

1a. Brâvou is the go-to positive adjective for a human. It can mean "good", "beautiful/handsome", "agreeable" or, as in this translation, "dear".

1b. Brâv' ami is for a male addressee. Brâv' amî is for a female addressee.

2. It's surprisingly hard to find translations of "journal" or "diary" in my reference languages. Silvish adapted journâlou from French journal (intime).

3. Ê la jantilyîje de literally means "have the kindness to"

4. Just using the bare imperative to translate "please". There isn't a strong expectation to say "please" to one's friends.

5. In a list of nouns, the determiner has to be restated whenever the nouns aren't all of the same gender, case and number. The nouns in this list are all common gender, accusative case and plural; but they differ on sex-based gender. Novèlla and létra are both feminine, while poêmou and lîvrou are masculine.

6. This sentence means literally "I embrace you all". Toû is used for a group of male or mixed-gender addressees; toùta is for a group of female addressees.
