First sentence

Post by Alessio »

I would like to know if you have any default sentence you always use to "test" your conlangs. For me, it's the following:

Hello, my name is Alessio, I live in Italy and I am <current age> years old.

If you have such a sentence, I'd like to see its translation in your main conlangs, as well as, if you want, that of the above sentence. I'll go first (with my natlangs as well), considering that I'm currently 22:

:con: Hecathver/Häħadhvar

hello 1SG.GEN name be.3SG Alessio live-1SG in Italy-DAT.PROPER and 1SG.DAT be.TEMP-3PL two-ten-and-two year-PL

Hecathver uses different case endings for proper nouns and common nouns, that's why <vim> is marked as DAT.PROPER.

:con: Hajás

hello 1SG call-REFL Alessio house-POSS-1SG be.PRES in.OPEN Italy-LOC and life-time-POSS-1SG be.PRES two ten-GEN and two year-PL

Since Hajás applies vowel harmony rules to most suffixes, wherever you see a V in the gloss it means that the harmonic vowel goes there. Also notice that sjád+tV reduces to sjatta (shortening the vowel and assimilating /d/ to /t/).

good day 3PL call-3PL 1SG.OBJ Alessio 1SG live-1SG in Italy and old-VBL-1SG two-ten-two year-PL

"VBL" means "verbalized", as sentences like "to be X years old" are expressed by changing the adjective to a verb.

:ita: Italian

hello 1SG 1SG.REFL call-1SG Alessio live-1SG in Italy and have.1SG twenty-two year-PL

Yeah, "I call myself". Kind of like in French. It's a very common joke to hear "I don't call myself, other people call me" in reply to "What's your name?" ("How do you call yourself?").

:ita: Emilian - Dialàt Vgnulěṡ
Sciâvo, mè 'm ciâm Alêsio, a stâg in Itâlia e a gh'ò 22 (vint-e-dǒ) ân.

hello 1SG.TONIC 1SG.ATONE 1SG.REFL call.1SG Alessio 1SG.ATONE stay.1SG in Italy and 1SG.ATONE INTSF have.1SG twenty-and-two year.PL

"INTSF" -> intensifier, mandatory in expressions indicating possession. Also, "sciâvo" is actually a loanword from Venetian (and that's where "ciao" comes from, as well). Emilian doesn't really have many words to greet people, besides loanwords and possibly calques of Italian expressions.

EDIT: finally added all the glosses!

Under influence from David Peterson, I've used "Fish eat flowers" as a test sentence. In Lek-Tsaro:

I'll take both of yours for this challenge. I normally use a 218 sentences challenge that was once very popular, but can only hardly be found in the web now.
