Oaths of Strasbourg

Post by Lambuzhao »

I have a snippet of this thanks and due to Sal posting it on his Romlang site.

I intend to translate the Germanic version into Sadrås.
I welcome all comers to translate the Old French and Althochdeutsch into thematically congruent
:con: s wherever possible.

Or all into one :con:.

I’m terrible at glossing, so my apologies in advance. I plan on translating the german text into Gotski at some point but here is the Old French portion translated into Túrnnan.

Here’s Carl’s German response translated into Old Gotski. I’ll forego the IPA transcription because the orthography is pretty transparent.

Wikipedia's English translation renders "in o quid" as "so that", but the Romance language translations (possibly based on each other) all use "as long as / provided that". I need a way of saying the latter, so I'll go with that. In Silvish, that would be "si soulaman que", which is also how you say "if only", but the two meanings are differentiated because the following verb takes different forms of the subjunctive.

Hey, might be time to update this translation. The language itself has changed, but I also fiddled with certain word interpretations, certain prepositions. Maybe eventually I'll get it just right. The cist meon fradre Karlo construction in the original gave me grief the first time around, and it still does; this time, I've gone with an additional layer of apposition, cilui mui frarï Çharlon, literally "this one, my brother Charles".

Also, the translation now shows off one of the Silvish names that has an irregular accusative/oblique form. In the nominative case, Charles is Çharlou [ˈhaʁ.lu], and in the accusative and oblique cases it becomes Çharlon [hɑˈlɔ̃ŋ]. As it happens, the Silvish version of Lothair demonstrates the regular declension: NOM: Lotéryou [ləˈte.ʁju], ACC/OBL: Lotéryo [ləˈte.ʁjə]

nuskisaule “harmful”, from nuskir “harm” (Old Vissard noskir, nozre; the third-conjugation noskir deriving from the perfect noske, from a metathesised variant of the expected perfect *NOXĪ, of the verb *NOCERE, variant of NOCĒRE “injure, harm”. Compare *NASCERE, *NAXĪ > naskir “be born”, DĪCERE, DĪXĪ > diskir “say”) and the suffix -aule < -ĀBILIS.

vel “willingly”, an adverb derived from the oblique of ves “will, desire” (borrowed from some Germanic language, possibly Old English willa or Old Norse villi). This process of using an oblique form as an adverb is no longer productive, but has given rise to a number of other adverbs like sort "by luck, by chance", kose "because of", fin "with the goal of", eür "happily" (< SORTEM, CAUSAM, FĪNEM, AUGURIUM).

Note to the pronunciation of this sentence: the word for the Christian god is GÒT (always capitalized in religious texts). Usually, the Yélian stop assimilation rules would sometimes dissimilate the word, like in sentence 2 (the phoneme sequence /tp/ would always be rendered as [p] only). But as this would be considered disrespectful, a Schwa sound is inserted between two words.

cristeletòi (Southern Standard) [ˌkɾistələˈtɔʊ̯] - Christendom, the Christian world
cristiánitas (Northern Standard) [ˌkɾisˈtɪ̯aːnɨtɐʃ] - Christendom, the Christian world
Etymology: the Southern Standard word derives from cristelet "person of Christian belief" + tòi "free", which is occasionally used for mass nouns in religious contexts. The Northern Standrad word is a direct loan from Latin Chrīstiānitās

pèmanosé [ˌpɛmɐnɐˈseː] - salvation
Etymology: pèmano "to be redeemed, saved" + nominalizer -sé

icarat u X - from X onwards
Literally "from now, the moment of X"; icarat is an adverb with the meaning from now on.

liyd mancailar - (obsolete) by rights, by nature
Literally "from natural reasons of existence"

fecgúvenal [ɸəˈguːʋənɐl] - treaty, contract, covenant
Etymology: fecun "with" + gúvenal "written document"
Wipe the glass. This is the usual way to start, even in the days, day and night, only a happy one.

The use of the second person singular as an impersonal pronoun is due to the influence of various English descendant languages. For a linguistic comparison, here is the passage in 21st century Spanish.

Por el amor de Dios y por el pueblo cristiano, y por nuestro bien común, a partir de ahora, mientras Dios me dé sabiduría y poder, socorreré a este mi hermano Carlos con mi ayuda y cualquier otra cosa, como se debe socorrer a un hermano, según es justo, a condición de que él haga lo mismo por mí, y no tendré nunca acuerdo alguno con Lotario que, por mi voluntad, pueda ser perjudicial para mi hermano Carlos.
