just thought I'd pop in to say that, in the newest revision of Kannow, this'd be Ḽkkdastnèn kànnan [ˈɬkʰkʰtastʰnʷen ˈkʷʰɔnːan], so it's not as bad now

I'm curious as to whether the simple copular sentence really is the most idiomatic way to say this phrase in all of the natlangs posted here so far.

In Swedish, the literal translation of the sentence would be:

Språk är inte svåra.
language-PL COP.PRS NEG difficult-PL

However, this sounds quite unidiomatic, and I find the connotation to be vague. It's not evident that we're talking about learning/understanding languages here, since the plural marker on the adjective makes the noun feel markedly quantified, you'd want a preceding adjective to make it sound good, such as: Germanska språk är inte svåra. 'Germanic languages aren't hard'.

A better translation (imo), that remains close to the English version, would be:

Språk är inte svårt.
language-PL COP.PRS NEG difficult-N

In this version it's clear that we're talking about languages not being hard to understand/learn, since the neuter form of the adjective makes it clear that languages is to be interpreted as a generic concept (or somesuch...).

However, an even better idiomatic translation (again, imo), would be:

Det är inte svårt med språk.
3N COP.PRS NEG difficult.N with language-PL
lit. It's not hard with languages.

...which differs quite a lot from the original!

Basically the Swedish idiomatic construction is similar to what you find with verbs in English: To eat water is hard > It's hard to eat water. Swedish just takes it one step further, frequently inverting nominal subjects as well: Languages are fun > *It's fun with languages.

But... that means I'd actually have to nail down what the hell I'm doing with that language... which I am somewhat loathe to do. As it is, I am creating this shit on the fly whenever I feel like it. There's only so much that I have nailed down in my head so that I can build in a bit of consistency. Like the idea that the basic unit in the language is the verb... and verbs are always written in Chinese characters. From there the next most basic is the noun, which is sometimes re-derived from a verb and thus ignores the word for it in Chinese. From there we have adjectives and adverbs which are somewhat regularly derived from nouns and verbs. Finally are function words, prepositions and the like which are always written in Latin characters and ignore Chinese completely.

On top of that is a measure of spelling reforms which reflect the somewhat more limited phoneme inventory in the language. (Which is also something I haven't' set in in stone yet.) I know that accent marks are used occasionally to mark stress in uncommon words, or as in the language name, words that don't come from American English directly. This might be the best you'll get in terms of information on the language for a while.
Aszev wrote:I'm curious as to whether the simple copular sentence really is the most idiomatic way to say this phrase in all of the natlangs posted here so far.
I guess the answer depends on whether the point of these translations is to capture the sense most accurately, or to translate the exact sentence accurately. It seems like you've gone and done both.

It might be possible to create a more fluid and flexible language, like the old idea of a contact induced creole language. You could have more verbs, if you use more clauses than other languages for the same sentence. I like the idea of derived adjectives and verbs and also the functional=english, lexical=chinese dichotomy in orthography.
Colloquial German would in fact never use the simple Sprachen sind nicht schwierig. sentence, since there are no modal particles. Here are some examples of real German sentences [:D]

:deu: :de-hh:

(Even though evidence seems to lead to the opposite conclusion:) Languages aren't hard!
(I disagree with you and I am really angry:) Languages aren't hard!

(That's the only bad thing about languages:) Languages aren't hard!

(As I've said before and as you can see now:) Languages aren't hard!

Well, for me, my sentence was quite colloquial; I don't use modal particles that often. Instead, I'd say "schwer" anstatt "schwierig" to be honest.

I was actually referring to Testyal's translation, but you're right "schwer" is a better translation. What was your sentence? The sentence sounds really weird to me without modal particles if I try to imagine it in oral discourse.

Re: Languages Aren't Hard!

Post by Iyionaku »

Oops, I was pretty sure I provided a German translation. But as you say it, I didn't. :D

I think the best translation overall would be:
“Sprachen sind gar nicht schwer!“
Wipe the glass. This is the usual way to start, even in the days, day and night, only a happy one.
