Before I go, the only fictional part of a conlang can be the setting it is alleged to be in or that it hasn't been made yet.Keenir wrote:MrKrov wrote:No, of course it is. I'm confused. Which part did you not get? The part that previously existing things were not fantasy or the part where formerly existing things having modern day continuation (only in your head) is only pretend fantasy fiction? If the latter: show me the pterosaur!
If Ahzoh's fictional works are fantasy because its being made up...we make up conlangs, ergo the analogy i made with what i saw of your logic there.
What did you accomplish today? [2011–2019]
Re: What did you accomplish today?
Re: What did you accomplish today?
For me, fiction is something that is not real. Fantasy is a subset of fiction that markedly could not be real, at least according to our current understanding of how the universe works. Alt-hists are definitely not fantasy in my opinion, unless their point of divergence is the existence or advent of something that is, as i said above, markedly impossible.
Re: What did you accomplish today?
I'd kind of agree with Ahzoh on this, but I'm also kind of with Krov as well. "Fiction" certainly covers everything conworld and conlang related, but "fantasy" has more of a tinge of imagination and non-realism to it, especially magic and the supernatural.
For example, pterosaurs obviously aren't fictional in that they did once exist. Ents, on the other hand, certainly don't exist within the real world, and are thus completely imaginary. Ents aren't just fictional, they're entirely fantastical. But pterosaurs in the modern world? Well, neither pterosaurs nor the modern world, in isolation are fictional, but the two combined? Well that's clearly a work fiction. But to what degree? Explaining that situation clearly involves a level of imagination, but so does all fiction.
The line between fantasy and fiction is somewhat more blurry than the current discussion might suggest. Obviously we have science fiction, and there's even science fantasy, and of course there's fantasy that has little to no bearing at all in the real world.
Pterosaurs in the modern world is just "Jurassic Park" if you use cloning, and that's just science fiction.

You can tell the same lie a thousand times,
But it never gets any more true,
So close your eyes once more and once more believe
That they all still believe in you.
Just one time.

On a different note, MrKrov has been issued a formal warning for his behaviour earlier in this thread after two reports were made by two separate users. I hope we can all agree that such behaviour is out of place on this board and that further incidences will be rare

(if anyone wishes to discuss this, please PM me. I'd rather not bring further public discussion of this to the board)sangi39 wrote:On a different note, MrKrov has been issued a formal warning for his behaviour earlier in this thread after two reports were made by two separate users. Re: What did you accomplish today?
I confess I drew that assumption based on the absence of words like "still a" or "even more of a" before the word fantasy. As I type this, I realize those could simply have been pro-drop in MrKrov's dialect or ideolect.shimobaatar wrote:Who said MrKrov wouldn't have classified Ahzoh's conworld as a fantasy setting before now?Keenir wrote: Its just curious where you seem to draw the line denoting fantasy -- not at the periodic invasions of that world by enemies from another dimension (and i have vague memories of discussions about magic on that world), but the addition of one critter that looks like a big pterosaur.
my apologies for the assuming.

Astoundingly I'll still do it again to the next dim who earns it.

And of course you are fully within your rights to do so, but actions have consequences.MrKrov wrote:Astoundingly I'll still do it again to the next dim who earns it.
Note, however, that I did suggest any further discussion of this me brought to the attention of moderators by means of private messages.

Re: What did you accomplish today?
After a recent discussion in the Yay or Nay thread, I implemented evidentiality to Yélian! Yay!
My LateX grammar stagnates however, at 13 pages (while I have about 50 in Microsoft Word), I just don't find the time for it atm.

Wipe the glass. This is the usual way to start, even in the days, day and night, only a happy one.

Re: What did you accomplish today?
Sounds a bit like my wiki escapades over on Frath. I have an entire article that needs re-jiggering to match a few things in it, but I just haven't had the will to re do all the work on the page (also I'd have to go back through some threads and notes to make sure I have it all correct.)

Re: What did you accomplish today?
Finally wrote something on possession in Áalaléekowoó, an inordinate amount of time after I'd covered the rest of the nominal morphology. Meant I had to thrash out what I was going to do with the Proto-Algonquian inalienable nouns (generally simplified by analogy, but there are still a couple of irregular ones like "hand" and "mother").

Re: What did you accomplish today?
I'm not sure how much this counts as an acheivement as opposed to near suicide this close to heading off to uni but I've decided to take on the reconstruction of the T1 language family in the Akana Project, a project which has been ongoing since 2011.
Re: What did you accomplish today?
It's a mix of "oh hun, don't we all" and "let's wait how long that lasts". We have some stuff out here regarding our conjectures on T1 but it's not gonna be very useful, since we posted very minimally on it

Re: What did you accomplish today?
I've started work on a sign language.
Gândölansch (Gondolan) • Feongkrwe (Feongrkean) • Tamhanddön (Tamanthon) • Θανηλοξαμαψⱶ (Thanelotic) • Yônjcerth (Yaponese) • Ba̧supan (Basupan) • Mùthoķán (Mothaucian)

I'll probably post about it in a few days, i just need to get a few pieces of the grammar worked out beforehand.Osia wrote:Ooh! Can we see what you have so far?Parlox wrote:I've started work on a sign language.

Re: What did you accomplish today?
I have divised the syllable structure of the Charric languages:
C(y,w)V(V)(C) [East Charric]
(C)CV(C)(C) [West and Northeast Charric]
(O)(O)(R)(y,w)V(C) [Central Charric]
East Charric is the first to diverge from Takshian, so it preserved its syllable structure.
West and Northeast Charric are the next to diverge from Takshian but only after a series of vowel mutations, stress shifts, and vowel syncopes that, along with what would become Central Charric, turned them into triconsonantal root languages. Central Charric was the last of what could be called Takshian and underwent another wave of stress shifts and the resulting vowel syncopes are responsible for its strange tendencies for large clusters.
Haxyakian: tèukmā /ˈtè.uk.maː/ "venom"
Himoshian: ṭẹụkma /ˈt̰ɛː.ʊk.mɑː/ "venom"
Takshian: ṭẹıkma /ˈt̰ɛː.ɨk.mɑː/ "venom, infection"
E Charric: ṭēikmā /ˈtʷeː.ik.maː/ "venom, sting"
W Charric: ṭẹḵma /ˈtʼɛx.mɑː/ "medicine, bandage"
NE Charric: ṭēkmā /ˈtˤeːk.maː/ "venom, sting"
C Charric kṭmā /ˈktʰmɑː/ "fever, hot"
C(y,w)V(V)(C) [East Charric]

(O)(O)(R)(y,w)V(C) [Central Charric]
