Basically, have you ever come up with an idea for a conworld, that you thought would be really good? And then you go to implement it, but after thinking about it....you realized that it just wouldn't work, and therefore could not use it.
I just had a situation like this while I was coming up with ideas for Techaria. I thought a way for the Kron to tell time. There's a large mountain called "Vija Jendai" ("Mount Jendai")" in the middle of Kron. It's so large that it casts huge shadows from the sun.
So, a Kron queen called Nono Fuzimaji thought "If I place 12 cities circling around Jendai, spacing them correctly...the shadow from Jendai will cast over each city, once at a time. I could tell time with this."
So, basically, she made a really,
really,
REALLY large sundial. With a mountain and 12 cities. Given that Techaria has a day nearly equal that of Earth's, there's about 12 "hours" in a Kron day.
Therefore, each city has, for two hours, a massive shadow over it. At around 6:00 A:M, for example, the city of Taigc is shadowed by Jendai. At 4:00 AM, the city of Nono is shadowed instead.
This was a really cool idea....until I realized just how much of it wouldn't work. Ignoring the fact that Jendai would have to be
MASSIVE to fully shadow a whole city, this is all that I realized:
- It wouldn't work for the night, obviously
-Seasons would wreak havoc with this system, as the sun would be around for different times each season and therefore the hours would change quite a bit
- Techaria isn't in the solar system and is in it at the same time (
Don't even ask) so.....
Anyone else ever have this happen to them?
