Basically, have you ever come up with an idea for a conworld, that you thought would be really good? And then you go to implement it, but after thinking about it....you realized that it just wouldn't work, and therefore could not use it.

I just had a situation like this while I was coming up with ideas for Techaria. I thought a way for the Kron to tell time. There's a large mountain called "Vija Jendai" ("Mount Jendai")" in the middle of Kron. It's so large that it casts huge shadows from the sun.

So, a Kron queen called Nono Fuzimaji thought "If I place 12 cities circling around Jendai, spacing them correctly...the shadow from Jendai will cast over each city, once at a time. I could tell time with this."

So, basically, she made a really, really, REALLY large sundial. With a mountain and 12 cities. Given that Techaria has a day nearly equal that of Earth's, there's about 12 "hours" in a Kron day.

Therefore, each city has, for two hours, a massive shadow over it. At around 6:00 A:M, for example, the city of Taigc is shadowed by Jendai. At 4:00 AM, the city of Nono is shadowed instead.

This was a really cool idea....until I realized just how much of it wouldn't work. Ignoring the fact that Jendai would have to be MASSIVE to fully shadow a whole city, this is all that I realized:

- It wouldn't work for the night, obviously

-Seasons would wreak havoc with this system, as the sun would be around for different times each season and therefore the hours would change quite a bit

- Techaria isn't in the solar system and is in it at the same time (Don't even ask) so.....

Anyone else ever have this happen to them?

Oh god, where to even begin. Almost all of my ideas are this, to the point that I can hardly even think of examples to write about without feeling an irresistable desire to beat myself over the head as self-punishment.

My original draft for my 'selkies' was more than a little far-fetched given their evolutionary history was carnivoran and their adaptations where mostly marine-aquatic... The logical version got implemented (hence why I nicknamed them selkies; they look like seal-people) and the cool version is now being (almost ironically) implemented with a magical background as a 'separate' race (long story short; crazy god = cursed disciples).
I am now having a similar realism problem with my avian race though...

I am creating a conworld, which I refer to as the Carrion Series, that will contain three languages, Iriex, Dvoen and Maxna.

I rarely realize that one single* conworld** idea just won't work. (That doesn't mean I could get them to work; just that I've never realized I couldn't.)

*But sometimes I've realized two or more ideas couldn't possibly work together.

**But I've realized conlang ideas just won't work. For example, the 3Cons in which the PoAs and the MoAs could be permuted independently of one another for morphology.

Other than that, my most stupid idea was to make the Kaynur have a utopian society: in a single family unit you have the father, the mother, and the child. Everyone loves each other for their whole life and there are never any conflicts ever. The end.

Happens all the time to me too. Entire conworlds just didn't work out. Sometimes because I was just ripping off other ideas. Like one of my old conworlds, a complete Tolkien clone.

Whats with all the hot blue skinned people everyone keeps making? There's Mystique, the Na'vi, the Safir; why isn't there any love for green or orange or red skinned people?



My very first conworld was a big archipelago, and the idea was that the north, south, and east groups had never interacted before, even though some islands from the south and north were closer to each other than some of the northern islands. Also, there was a desert and a tundra right next to each other smack in the middle of the east group, even though the northern and southern islands parallel to them were all temperate.

I'm sure I've had other ideas like that before, but I try to make my conworlds as realistic as possible (even though magic exists in my main one).

Actually this is only a problem if your conworld is on a planet: I solved the problem by describing my conworld as being flat, with multiple suns that only give off a cone of light. Seasons, day/night, weather, and climate are determined by how much time each sun spends over each part of the world. (I'm handwaving away the effect of wind.)

And there's my problem. As I said, I like to make my conworlds more or less realistic; while I am intrested in experimenting with different models, I'm pretty fond of planets.
