Let me just pick a nit: Shouldn't the vowels be long?

Let me counter your nitpick with a: why should they?

They feel long in my pronunciation. Just like <rule> /ru:l/ as opposed to <full> /fUl/.

If I'm not mistaken, General American (or perhaps even most Americal dialects), makes a distinction of quality rather than length.

That, may be it. I'm so used to length distinction in Danish, I might be over-analyzing.

The length difference exists but is not contrastive.

As I thought then. It's pretty much a different school of transcription, that whole no length vs. length thingy, even if it isn't contrastive.

It's a matter of specificity. In English adding the length is not necessary because some vowels are always long and some are always short. It's not wrong to specify the length, but I generally don't bother.

It seems to be more of an American practice though.

At least i use /dʒ/ in that case, not unaspirated. And you're right, it depends on how well people know the language in question (I pronounced Jules Verne as [jules ʋerne] when i was little and didn't know how to pronounce it in french).

Are you a native English speaker? Am I mistaken in thinking that pretty much all English speakers pronounce "Jules Verne" the way you pronounced it as a kid and not the way it's supposed to be pronounced in French?

I've always heard /ʤulz ve˞n/ in English.

This is the way I said it as a kid.

/d͡ʒulz vɝn/ Not that much different for me.

Sorry, my fault. I kind of ignored the IPA when I first posted and now that I'm looking at it, obviously /jules ʋerne/ is not the way an English speaker would pronounce "Jules Verne" under any circumstances. What I should have said is "Am I mistaken in thinking that pretty much all English speakers pronounce 'Jules Verne' in some kind of phonetically Englishy way and not the way it's supposed to be pronounced in French?" I don't think I've ever heard an English speaker pronounce the name any way other than /ʤulz ve˞n/ or something similar, and honestly, if I were to hear someone say it in English with the front rounded vowel, I would probably think they were being a twit.

Anyway, I'm going to go hide in a corner now and try to learn IPA again.

Yeah, I also got the feeling that it's quite dialect-dependent.

Oop, time to pop onto iTunes and download it.

'Tis always good to have something informational playing in the background, even when you're not actually listening to it.

Well that was the first podcast I listened to all the way through and it was thoroughly enjoyable. [:D]

And that grammar has given me so much inspiration for my a posteriori langs...

No! Never stop the podcast!

More seriously, I liked this episode a lot. I'm now writing a post on phonological processes in Alife.
